Protecting the only remaining Tamal Húye (Coast Miwok) built home on ancestral homelands
关于我们
Alliance for Felix Cove utilizes both Defend and Decolonize strategies to protect the only remaining Tamal Húye (Coast Miwok) built home on ancestral homelands on Calupetamal now known as the Point Reyes National Seashore (PRNS) and to Decolonize the identify and history of Calupetamal from the European and Euro-American ranching history of PRNS. The Felix family, a Tamal Húye family, lived at Point Reyes Peninsula since time immemorial and the cove, now named Laird’s Landing since the Mexican era of California (1822-1848). Laird’s Landing is on the western shores of Tomales Bay which is a 90 minute drive north from San Francisco in Marin County. Nineteenth century dairy ranchers, the Laird’s, used the road that leads to the cove to access Tomales Bay to load dairy products (e.g., cheese and butter) for shipment to San Francisco. According to the Felix family, they lived at the cove from early 1800s. At least four generations of the Felix family lived at the cove until unjustly evicted by white ranchers in the 1950s.

Emergence Magazine has added a fourth episode to their podcast series “Coming Home to the Coveâ€â€”a multigenerational story of a Coast Miwok family’s eviction from their ancestral home in Northern California and one woman’s mission to bring the living history of her family back to the land. Marin County in Northern California, where Emergence Magazine and Kalliopeia Foundation are located, has been home for millennia to the Coast Miwok people, who continue to live and thrive here despite settler-colonial efforts to erase them from the story of this land. Throughout this series, Theresa Harlan (founder and director of grantee partner Alliance For Felix Cove) chronicles the story of her family’s displacement from their homestead on a cove in Tomales Bay and shares her grassroots efforts to involve the wider community in protecting both the history and the future of this place. Recorded in January 2025, this new episode explores the impact of Theresa's work to protect, restore, and rematriate the cove over the last three years. Amid ongoing vandalism of her ancestral home, rancher evictions, and new land management, she continues to fight for a larger vision of healing, and asks, are we willing to come together to honor the entire story of a land? ↘? Looking forward to the years ahead, the Alliance's vision remains grounded in the power of our ?? future generations. ?? Since we started our work three years ago, countless young people have connected with the land and water at Felix Cove. It is for them we are doing this work. Deepening our young relatives' relationship to Mother Earth now - and inspiring them to protect it - is what will sustain the health and resiliency of our ancestral homelands for generations to come.
