Obesity is a significant risk factor for sleep apnea. Excess weight, especially around the neck and upper airway, can narrow the breathing passage, making it more likely for the soft tissues to collapse during sleep, causing breathing pauses or apneas. Additionally, fat deposits can accumulate in the throat, further narrowing the airway and increasing the risk of collapse. Furthermore, obesity is often linked to chronic inflammation, which can contribute to airway inflammation and swelling, making it more susceptible to collapse. Learn more: ?? https://lnkd.in/gxZp_wCK

Thank you to the Florida Association of Sleep Technologists (F.A.S.T) board members for inviting me to present at their annual conference in Orlando over the weekend! Such a wonderful opportunity to be able to educate their members on the need for advocating for sleep apnea patients and showcase the work that the Alliance of Sleep Apnea Partners is doing on behalf of those suffering from sleep apnea. This is the first time F.A.S.T members had an opportunity to hear from patient advocates. Emma Cooksey from Project Sleep was the other patient advocate to share her lived experience and advocacy journey. #OSA #patientadvocacy
