Experiencing trauma in the workplace doesn’t always make you stronger. It doesn’t always make you more prepared to “overcome” or “tackle” or “conquer” future hurt or harm. You don’t always grow thicker skin. You don’t always become more prepared to help others with their trauma. You don’t always rise above it. It’s another form of toxic positivity when we force the belief that trauma makes us stronger. Because we all have our own journeys with trauma & healing. “Give us our roses while we’re still here.” - B. Parker ??????? On this Transgender Day of Remembrance, we cling to the power and legacies of our trans and nonbinary siblings lost in the last year. As reported by the Human Rights Campaign, at least twenty-eight trans and gender-expansive folks were taken through violent means in 2024. Any loss of a trans person is a loss of great light in our world. We situate ourselves at a moment in history where trans people face extreme challenges to everyday life and livelihood. We know you’re struggling and we hear you loud and clear. Here is our message to you: You are needed; you are wanted; the world is better for you being here. Today, we honor those we’ve lost and celebrate those who are still here: ??Trans kids growing up across America ??Trans parents building beautiful families ??Trans advocates fighting for affirming policy protections ??Trans teens navigating coming out to their friends ??Trans teachers fostering inclusive classrooms ??Trans leaders on the ground, making their voices heard ?? Today, November 20th is Trans Day of Remembrance, a day we remember and honor the lives of our Trans siblings who were lost this year. This memorial includes only the names of folks who we’ve lost within the United States, uplifting the memories of the 120 trans siblings who passed away between November 2023 and October 2024. According to the Trans Remembrance Project, over half of the deaths occurred from acts of violence. Of those who died from acts of violence, the majority are Black trans women. About a quarter of those who died from non-violent acts succumbed to health complications, highlighting the disparity in healthcare access that the Trans community faces.? ? We hold space for those lost and offer our deepest condolences to the friends and families of the victims. Those we’ve lost shall not be forgotten. The Alliance for LGBTQ Youth will continue to stand with, support, and advocate with and for our trans youth, their families, and community until true liberation is a reality for all.? ?
