Promoting Civic Engagement Through Community Media

关于我们

The Alliance for Community Media is a national membership organization that advocates, promotes and preserves the right to media training, production, distribution, civic engagement and education in support of diverse community voices, through Public, Educational and Government (PEG) access channels and other forms of media. Founded in 1976, the Alliance represents over 3,000 PEG access organizations and community media centers throughout the country. The ACM works to protect the interests of these access centers and those who use PEG facilities and equipment to advance their causes through cable television and the Internet.

We had an amazing turnout of community media folks in St Paul, MN this past week at St Paul Neighborhood Network. Thanks to Bradley Werner and Cablecast for their sponsorship of the event, which included a discussion of 2025 policy and legislative work to come, a networking lunch and a presentation on what it takes to have accessible web content with the new ADA guidelines. We hope that by putting on the event, it will strengthen the network of practitioners in Minnesota and support the regional organizing work of ACM Midwest.

Last week, we wrapped up our 2024 Emerging Leaders Institute. We had participants from all across the country. The institute included four virtual, interactive workshops throughout October, plus peer coaching, and was led by Paula Manley and Toni Tabora, nonprofit consultants and community builders with deep roots in community media, media arts, and leadership development. Many thanks to all the donors who gave gifts of support to the Foundation last year to help FACM defray the costs of training for this year’s co-hort. Congratulations to the 2024 cohort! https://buff.ly/3WA2itr

Join us next week on Thursday, October 31st at 3 pm ET/12 pm PT for a special webinar on the 2024 Community Media Assets Survey, a collaborative research project energized by the News Futures Community Media Center (CMC) Working Group. Since 2018, News Futures has been a collective of people, ideas, and spaces focused on building a participatory and networked future for local news. CMCs are an essential part of this future, and collecting data on how CMCs serve diverse communities is a crucial first step in fostering cross-sector partnerships nationwide. During this session, Dr. Antoine Haywood, a CMC Working Group co-facilitator, will overview the growing productive relationship between News Futures and CMCs, share insights from the survey’s findings, and discuss opportunities for future field research. The winners of the survey raffle will also be announced. Register here ---> https://buff.ly/3Um9cAG
