?Biosolutions High Level Summit 2024 is a wrap ?? ?? ? Our vision of establishing a platform and gathering point for the biosolutions ecosystem has certainly come true?? ? Yesterday marked the culmination of months of work as the Biosolution High Level Summit 2024 took place at the Danish Parliament hosted by Linea S?gaard-Lidell. ? The summit showed the power of cross-sector collaboration. By uniting the biosolutions ecosystem, we can strengthen our competitiveness within the EU. ? We have a common narrative and this is “just the beginning” as CEO Ester Baiget from Novonesis stated very well?? ? A big THANK YOU goes out to all speakers and our excellent moderator Natasha Foote,?all participants, and of course especially our co-organizing partners at the Novo Nordisk Foundation and DI Bio for supporting our ambitions on behalf of Europe ?? ? ?? We are not giving up ?? A national growth plan for #biosolutions is a KEY priority for us?? And after that an EU strategy ? Such a strategy should be in place prior to the Danish EU presidency - at least if you ask us?? With the upcomming presidency we have a UNIQUE chance to pave the way for more sustainable biosolutions within EU. Earlier this year the Danish government has PROMISED that a national growth plan for the biosolutions sector will be initiated. ?However, we are still awaiting the concrete initiative, as earmarked funds is not part of the politicial agreement on the "Financial Law" (Finansloven) for Denmark in 2025, presented earlier today. We will continue to push tirelessly ?? The time for biosolutions is now ??

???? Denmark leads the way with a CO2 tax on the agri sector ?? ? A broad majority in the Danish Parliament has reached a historic political agreement, paving the way for: ? ?? A more sustainable agricultural sector ? ?? Increased forestry and natural areas ? ?? Significant reductions in CO2 and nitrogen emissions ? ? This is good news for the biosolutions sector! ? A CO2 tax on agriculture will help level the playing field for innovative biosolutions ?? This is something we’ve actively advocated for, as shown in the picture where we had the privilege of providing our input and advice to the “green tripart” from the bioeconomy perspective. ? But it is also great news as the?Danish government has promised that a national growth?plan for #biosolutions will be initiated as a result of the “green tripart” agreement. A KEY priority for us at Alliance for Biosolutions? ? ? And in case you need a reminder, here’s how biosolutions can make a difference: ? ? Biofertilizers and biostimulants: Boost crop yields while reducing reliance on fossil- and chemical-based plant protection ?? ? ? Feed additives (enzymes, probiotics): Allow smaller amounts of feed to achieve the same growth. Locally produced feed can replace imported soy, helping reduce deforestation ?? ? ? Alternative protein sources: Produced through fermentation, these require less land and deliver high nutritional yields—freeing up space for biodiversity and wild nature ?? ? ? Better utilization of side streams and biomass: Transform agricultural byproducts into valuable materials and bioplastics, storing carbon in consumer goods and construction materials ??? ? ?? And there’s more! The agreement includes an additional fund of around 400 million DKK to boost the demand for plant-based foods ??? ? We’re hopeful that these funds will support innovative companies scaling up sustainable proteins ?? ? Lastly, it’s encouraging to see the Danish Government advocating for an EU action plan for plant-based foods, including #biosolutions. ? Let’s keep the momentum going! ??

These iconic words, quoted by Dr. Jennifer Maria Cords at the 2024 Biosolutions High Level Summit at the Danish Parliament—and of course, by a certain superhero—highlight a key challenge for the #biosolutions sector. ? In a panel discussion with International head of corporate affairs at Lidl International Dr. Jennifer Maria Cords, CEO at Novonesis Ester Baiget, and EVP at Arla Foods Hanne Sondergaard, Jennifer stressed the need to BRIDGE THE GAP between sustainanble food innovation and consumer acceptance ???? ? While biotech-based foods could drive sustainability, the average consumer isn’t yet on board throughout Europe. ? Making sustainable choices the new mainstream will require more than innovation—it calls for strong regulatory support and behavioral change ???? ? And a supportive start could be a national growth plan on biosolutions including a consumer acceptance track! ? ?? Denmark as a center of excellence? Today, we had the pleasure of hosting law professor Linda Nielsen, who enchanted a very lively audience with her insights and recommendations on regulatory sandboxes within a biosolution context. Linda kicked off with the saying, "The US masters innovation, and the EU masters regulation," and immediately posed a critical question: How can we make regulatory mastery work to our advantage? Enter regulatory sandboxes—a trending solution that allows companies to test innovative ideas under the guidance of a competent authority. These sandboxes offer the flexibility to move fast and learn, transforming regulation from a roadblock into a red carpet for innovation ??. As we concluded, Denmark has the potential to lead the way in this space. Why? Because Denmark already ticks the right boxes: ?? World-class biosolution research ?? Strongholds and leading companies in the field ?? A culture of open dialogue with regulators, researchers, and innovators And to realize all this, Linda posed the idea about a Biosolution Fourm+ - a collaborative platform bringing together authorities, companies, and researchers to guide companies. ?? This week, we had the pleasure of showcasing the power of biosolutions to Helle Bonnesen, the business spokesperson for the Conservative Party at the Danish Parliament. ? We strongly believe in the power of examples. There’s nothing quite like seeing biosolutions in action to understand their potential ??? ? Together with Helle, we visited ALGIECEL’s innovative facilities at Teknologisk Institut?? where CCO Susanne Palsten Buchardt introduced Helle to the fascinating world of biosolutions and more specifically Algiecel’s technology using microalgae, photosynthesis, and CO2 to develop sustainable food, feed and cosmetics. ? After the visit we headed to the headquarters at Novonesis, where we enjoyed a tasty plant-based hotdog (sausage based on pea protein) with our chair of Alliance for Biosolutions Peter Steen Mortensen and his knowledgeable team Tilde Hellis Lauge and Mette Holse ???? ? During the day we had some insightful conversations about the momentum in the biosolutions sector, as well as some challenges our sector faces: ? ?? Funding gaps in the EU ? ?? Regulatory challenges ? ?? The need for a national strategy for biosolutions in DK prior to our EU presidency (ultimately an EU strategy) ? ?? Educational reform and future talent ?
