Over the past decade, I've reviewed thousands of resumes and conducted countless interviews with transitioning junior military officers, and I've noticed some common pitfalls in language. So, instead of focusing on "magic words," let's talk about what to AVOID: Here are 4 of the 8 words and phrases that can weaken your job search: ? Subordinates: Avoid this term. It can suggest a hierarchical mindset, which may not be ideal for collaborative corporate environments. Use: soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, people, personnel, teammates, employees. ? Men/Man: while factually accurate in some military contexts, using only these terms can raise questions about your experience leading diverse teams. Use gender-neutral language. ? Responsible for: Focus on ACTION and RESULTS, not just responsibilities. Instead of "Responsible for planning...", try "Planned and coordinated a training program that certified 25 people...". ? I was able to: This phrase sounds passive. Use strong action verbs: "I led my division through..." instead of "I was able to lead..."
