We’re excited to share some great news about our work with the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) ????. We’ve introduced new kiosks at each of the state’s veterans cemeteries ???. Think of these kiosks as interactive touchscreens that help visitors find information easily while they’re at the cemetery ??. They allow people to search for veteran records on-site without having to navigate through different websites ??. This means finding the right information is quick and simple ??. Each kiosk is set up with an on-screen keyboard, making it easy for anyone to use ???. Plus, they’re customized to reflect the unique character of each cemetery, ensuring a user-friendly experience ??. These kiosks are just one part of our larger project aimed at digitizing and modernizing cemetery management ??. We’ve been mapping over 180,000 sections of veteran burials, restoring the numbering of all sectors in every cemetery using a combination of satellite imagery ??? and our extensive database ??. It’s a complex task, but we’re committed to maintaining accuracy and enhancing the overall experience ???. Right now, Carr Cemetery manages all its records on paper, which can be tricky and time-consuming. ?? Our mission is to update these processes by transitioning to a digital system. ?? This change will make managing records much easier and more efficient, helping the cemetery serve the community better. ?? Curator Benoit Gallot, who’s been in charge since 2018, says the goal is to relief from the summer heat. ?? Some visitors love the fresh, organic feel, while others miss the traditional upkeep. ?? But with more greenery comes the risk of storm damage to graves, and the repair costs are shared between families, city hall, and insurance. ?? Not only is it the world’s first underwater cemetery, but it’s also on its way to becoming the largest man-made reef in the world.
