Allergic to TREE NUTS? There's been an important labeling update to be aware of: The FDA has redefined which nuts are required to be labeled. While we prefer to see wider-than-not inclusion of tree nuts identified on ingredient labels, some of these changes make sense. For example: Coconut is a palm fruit, not a tree nut. And while individuals can be allergic to coconut separately, this allergy is not correlated to an allergy to tree nuts. Shea nut (whose derivatives are frequently found in personal care items such as lotion and hair care products) is made from the fat of shea nuts. Allergy to shea nut is rare.
