Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the launch event for LabCentral Funding Innovation Studio (FIS), a strategic initiative in the LabCentral Ignite program. FIS's mission is to increase funding access, opportunity, and inclusion for women and BIPOC founders in the life sciences - an important goal in today's entrepreneurial landscape. I think about this a bit since All Stage is focused on enhancing the early-stage investing and fundraising process. A key feature of our products is enabling investor-to-founder feedback, which helps drive collaboration between investors and founders, and informs investment decisions within teams. Investors can provide ad hoc feedback and quantitative ratings on investment opportunities, supporting founders in refining their approach. Interestingly, FIS had experimented with using a 1-6 rating scale for pitch events, rather than the 1-5 scale used by All Stage. Siri Chilazi (Women and Public Policy Program at the Harvard Kennedy School), speaking on a panel moderated by Ignite's Beth McKeon and including Vinit Nijhawan (he/him) (MassVentures), explained the rationale. While 1-5 scales can be convenient, they often result in a large number of neutral "3" ratings that don't provide actionable insights to either investors or founders. In response to this feedback, All Stage has now updated its feedback products to use a 1-6 rating scale. This allows for more nuanced feedback, with scores clearly falling into either the positive or negative range. The new 1-6 scale aims to generate more meaningful and actionable feedback for all participants in the fundraising process. To date, of the tens of thousands of startup feedback ratings provided by investors on the All Stage platform, one-third had previously been "3" ratings - a helpful measurement for Goldilocks' porridge, but generally unhelpful for investing and fundraising. The small adjustment in scoring will should have measurable impact on the value for investors and founders.
