How can we better prepare students for a lifelong commitment to nonpartisan civic engagement? “What I’ve learned is that students want to be engaged. They are curious. They are passionate. And they are ready to take on difficult conversations. But they also need guidance in developing the skills that come with civic engagement and civil discourse — how to listen actively, respond thoughtfully, and engage with those who disagree. In today’s polarized climate, that ability is more important than ever.” — Dr. Sanne Rijkhoff, Associate Professor of Political Science at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Dive into our most recent Forbes piece from Dr. Sanne Rijkhoff for some insight into what colleges and universities can do to foster civic engagement and dialogue on campus.

Students face extra barriers to voting including lack of transportation, confusing residency requirements, and voter ID laws. With the help of their campus sharing trusted messages, many more eligible students were able to register and cast their ballots in 2024. Congratulations to the 251 ALL IN campuses that have been designated a #VoterFriendlyCampus by Fair Elections Center and NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education!

We are thrilled to announce the inaugural interview of our virtual speaker series, “Engaged Conversations.” Our first guest is Stephanie King, the Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives for the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. Stephanie has been a dedicated advocate for civic engagement in higher education since 2009, with experience spanning student activities, orientation, residence life, and civic learning. She earned her MA in psychology from Chatham University and a BS in biology from Walsh University. Her contributions to the field include co-creating the Voter Friendly Campus program and serving as an election clerk for the Town of Dedham in Massachusetts. Leading this engaging conversation is Himal Shrestha, a computer programming and information systems major at Farmingdale State College and SUNY Empire State Service Corp in Civic Engagement. The Empire State Service Corps offers SUNY students paid public service opportunities, allowing them to gain hands-on experience while serving their communities. Himal’s involvement in the Office of Civic and Community Engagement exemplifies his commitment to civic participation and community service. Watch their interview to gain insights from Stephanie’s extensive experience in fostering civic engagement and to be inspired by Hishmel’s dedication to community involvement. Are your students planning on studying abroad? Make sure they’re ready to make their voices heard in elections this year! To prepare your students for voting while overseas, they need to: ? Register to vote in their state before departing for their trip. If your students have already registered, make sure they check their registration so it’s fully up to date. ? Complete the Federal Post Card Application to receive an absentee ballot abroad. ? Fill out their ballot and send it back ASAP so there’s enough time for their ballot to be received and counted. Be sure to have your students follow these steps so they can still make a difference while studying in a different country! Learn more about voting while abroad: allin.vote/voting-abroad
