So what do I do? I eat, live, and breathe soft skills. I believe developing these skills is taking a massive step towards a kinder, more communicative, and empathetic world. I teach soft skills workshops using the tool of puppetry. Participants learn how to develop awareness, adaptability, problem solving, and more while having fun engaged in play. Discover what happens when you infuse teamwork with authenticity, soft skills, and play. To learn more click the link in our bio. Photo Credit: HowlandRosePhotography #allhandsin

  • I’ll be honest, Kick Assers. Practicing adaptability is still challenging for me at times. When I’m stressed out, overwhelmed or feel uncertain, my rigid mindset definitely becomes activated. It’s taken a lot of awareness to slow down and pay attention when my rigidity gets activated. Knowing how to self regulate and stay flexible during times of stress and anxiety has literally been a life saver. In real life, this looked like staying flexible while my relationship was ending, my housing was becoming uncertain and my career was undergoing radical changes all at once. Staying flexible was not my default setting at all during that transition. Knowing how to practice adaptability definitely kept me moving forward and helped me preserve my mental and physical health. Life is going to throw curve balls at us when we’re truly living. We’ll be forced to navigate breakups, relocations, health concerns, the list goes on. Being able to meet these moments of change with a flexible and adaptive mindset is a major asset. If you’re curious about what a soft skills practice centered in adaptability can look like for you, connect with us through the link in our bio and let’s schedule a time to chat!

  • Hey hey, Kick Assers! Did you know that having a flexible and adaptive mindset has been linked to greater problem solving and being more solution oriented? When our mindset is more rigid, we tend to approach change with a limited perspective, which can hamper creativity, innovation and carry painful consequences. Rigid thinkers also tend to struggle with comparison, control and perfectionism. What type of mindset do you tend to shift toward? For me, I used to really struggle with a rigid mindset. When I began to make adaptability a daily practice, I noticed how uncomfortable it was but that it also allowed me to see the opportunities in challenges. The more flexible my mindset became, the more I discovered I also gained greater agency and success in my problem solving. What’s another benefit of practicing an adaptive mindset? We can strengthen our mental flexibility at any stage of our life. If you’re curious to learn what a daily practice centered in adaptability can do for you, click the link in our bio and let’s schedule a time to chat!

  • My recent experience with adaptability has transformed everything I thought I knew about this soft skill. I knew this was challenging for our brains and egos to process and navigate but I was forced to adapt when I was confronted with a recent two year period of chronic change and uncertainty, which included massive unemployment in the entertainment industry (my primary career source of income), my home of 14 years being sold to new owners and choosing to move out, moving in with my former partner, breaking up five months later and accepting that in my current position I needed to return to the east coast to be close to my family, all while assessing the other changes happening personally and professionally for me. To say change has been fairly consistent for me in the past two plus years would be a massive understatement. Even knowing the skills I needed to deploy to help me navigate times of chronic stress, anxiety, burnout, grief and fear, didn’t completely absolve the pain of discomfort. But it did give me a path through it that didn’t leave me causing more damage to myself or those around me. Understanding how to lean into adaptability during challenging times allows us to self-regulate our emotions, respond to stressors rather than react to them and to process our fear rather than projecting it onto others. • Adaptability can feel super overwhelming when we don’t know where or how to begin. When I started making adaptability a focused practice, I noticed three things I consistently did that made practicing it more manageable and practical. I made peace with discomfort. Let me clarify. This doesn’t mean that I no longer feel discomfort. I still do. But how I sit with discomfort has shifted. I learned the value of stepping away in order to gain clarity. Taking breaks allows me to slow down and see more clearly when navigating change. I aim to compassionately assess and reset when I am struggling with adaptability. When I notice I am struggling, I ask myself, “Do I need to shift deadlines or make other compromises at this moment?” There will always be times when shit needs to shift and this includes within ourselves. Adapting to this approach has saved me from burnout, kept me in line with my integrity and even garnered the trust of those I work with and lead. When I made adaptability a practice, a lot began to shift for me. But I had to find ways to practice it at first. If you struggle when it comes to adapting and navigating change, let’s chat about how creating your authentic soft skills practice can be beneficial. • Hey Hey, Kick Assers! New month, new theme. This month at All Hands In, we are examining one of the hardest and most valuable soft skills, adaptability. Practicing adaptability is challenging because change is uncomfortable, especially when we’re not certain what the outcome will be. When we’re struggling with the uncomfortable unknown, this is when we tend to either fall back to our old comforts and resist change OR brave through the discomfort, accepting the change presented to us and adapting as we find our way through it. The truth is, adaptability is required when we want to grow, improve or make changes in our lives. Whether we’re hoping for professional growth, to have more loving relationships or even to improve our mental and physical health, we must confront change and practice adaptability if we want to achieve our goals. What’s the good news about adaptability? It’s a soft skill, which means it’s something we can practice and develop over time. This month, I’ll be talking about what adaptability is, why it’s important and how to practice it. So stay tuned, Kick Assers, because learning how to navigate change is one of the most kick ass things we can do for ourselves. We got this!

  • Kick Asser, if I’m being honest, empathy has been a learned skill for me and still requires practice. When I am struggling to find empathy, I lean into my empathy “reminders.” These reminders ground me in the benefits of empathy and serve as a gentle nudge toward the choices I want to make when trying to build trust, connection and healing spaces. Curious to learn more ways to practice empathy, Kick Assers? Start by saving this post, sharing your thoughts and liking it. You can also click the link in our bio and schedule a time to chat.

  • Here is why I am so inspired by my empathy practice. I see first hand the power of this soft skill when it is put into practice. I have watched it transform fear-based behaviors, such as judgement, shame and othering, into powerful connection, belonging and authenticity. When I think about how empathy has impacted my life, I am grateful for how it has connected me with my humanity more deeply and created more loving relationships in my communities.
