I hope you can join me for this very important international conference on plugging and abandonment operations. I’ll be speaking in the last session on Idle & Orphan Wells. I hope to show a little history and some of the challenges we’re confronted with. With over 3.5 million idle & orphan wells in the United State, we have our challenges. But… There are *many* challenges! In the days of early oil & gas development, global population was only about 1 billion people and today we are over 8 billion. This incredible increase in population has put people, infrastructure development, and all sorts of things at a cross-roads with historic oil & gas activity. In countries like India, early development was in the northeast extent of the country and over the last many decades, that’s where people have migrated to because of the presence of water and resources. Other areas (e.g., Nigeria, Venezuela, etc.) have been challenged not only with population increases, but also with political challenges. So whether we’re trying to tackle 120 year old wells in the Arkansas River here in Tulsa, Oklahoma; offshore wells in the North Sea, inland wells in massive lakes in Venezuela, or wells with multitudes of people living in and around these wells… We have just a few challenges… Anyway… I hope you’ll join me and the many other experts at this virtual workshop!!! This is a follow-up news article (AND VIDEO) from my trip with Tulsa City Counselor Jayme Fowler to the Arkansas River here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Burt Mummolo from Tulsa’s News Channel 8 joined us to look at old Oil Wells in the River, just a few miles south of Downtown Tulsa. All of the wells you’ll see in the video are over 100 years old and truly show a piece of Tulsa’s history as the former Oil Capital of the World. However, as you can also see in the video, none of these old wells are producing, they are an environmental hazard (leaking oil and methane gas), and have left significant ancient equipment simply abandoned in the river (e.g., heavily corroded wellheads, cables, flow lines, and more). Hopefully you find this as interesting as I do. So many times in life, we have these things that are right in front of us that we never seem to become curious about and never investigate. Curiosity is a huge driver in all our lives. Be curious! Lastly, I wanted to put a shout out to my step-sons (Isaac & Carter). They got cold & wet pulling our raft around through the deeper water so we could carry equipment and stay a little dryer. They also helped me collect and carry back some old equipment for my collection! I’ve taken them out to the River multiple times looking for old wells, coal seams, arrowheads, fossils, and more. Earlier today, I met up with Tulsa City Councilor Jayme Fowler and Burt Mummolo from Channel 8 News. My two step-sons and I gave Jayme & Burt a tour of a few of the “old” Orphan Oil Wells that still remain in the Arkansas River, just south of downtown Tulsa. We don’t have records, but I’m estimating that all of these wells were drilled before 1920. Thus far, I’ve identified about 50 old wells that are either in the river or on the banks of the river, but today we just looked at a handful for the story. I should note that these wells are in plain site and not only are these old wells still around, there is a lot of other associated materials remaining that is also in the river (e.g., flow lines, casing heads, corroded casing, etc.). Two of the wells we visited today were leaking methane to the surface and one was oil filled (and also had methane bubbling up). My hope is that showing these historical legacies from the former “Oil Capital of the World” will serve to prioritize getting these wells permanently plugged and abandoned. There is currently over $4 Billion in federal funding available for plugging these types of wells throughout the United States, but there are a “LOT” of wells across the country to plug!!! Fortunately, here in Oklahoma, we have a State Idle & Orphan well plugging fund, which helps, but it’s not enough. There are also some new private sector incentives (such as carbon credits for eliminating methane emissions that I’m working diligently on). Obviously, there are other industry and charitable sources of funding, but plugging a well in the middle of a river isn’t necessarily an easy deal nor inexpensive, especially when you look at all the things that are associated (e.g., pipe, hydrocarbons, etc.). I’ve also included a couple historic post cards in case anyone doesn’t understand that we actually did drill wells “IN” the River. Anyway, here are a few photos in advance of the story that should be out next week.

I also dislike seeing these great historical pieces that show tremendous craftsmanship just be taken to the landfill. Sooo… FLAGS!
