The dental career everyone is most familiar with is the private practice dentist, meaning an individual dentist or a partnership working with local patients in their own practice. That's the kind of dentist we all go to for our normal dental health needs, but not everyone who graduates from a four-year dental program goes in this direction. ?? About 20% of dentists undergo additional years of training in one of the nine dental specialties: Dental Public Health, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, and Prosthodontics. Academic dentists add a teaching role and help usher in the next generation of dentists. Research dentists get to be on the cutting edge of new advancements in treatments and technology. Some dentists work internationally with organizations like the WHO, UNESCO, and FAO. Finally, there are dentists who work alongside physicians in hospitals. ?? Aside from the dentists themselves, other essential roles in the field of dentistry are dental hygienists, dental assistants, and dental lab technicians. Hygienists and assistants interact closely with patients to ensure a high level of care, while dental lab technicians work behind the scenes designing the dentures, crowns, and braces dentists use. Most of these support roles require at least an associate's degree or training program. We hope our team has inspired a future dentist or two! ?? #DentalCareers #FutureCareer #school #GenevaIL #AllAboutYouDentalCare

A bad fall, an injury in a game, or biting down the wrong way on something are just a few things that could lead to a damaged or knocked-out tooth. ?? The best person to see in these cases (after getting emergency treatment for any dangerous injuries) is the endodontist. The most effective treatment for an injured tooth depends on the severity of the crack or chip in it. If the tooth only has a fractured crown, it can usually be repaired. Sometimes, it will take root canal treatment and a crown to restore the function of a broken molar. If the tooth splits down to the root, it may need to be pulled. A tooth that has been knocked out of place or pushed deeper into its socket may require root canal treatment, but it is often possible to reposition and restabilize it. For a tooth that is knocked out completely, the faster we can treat it after the accident, the better the chances are that the tooth can be successfully replanted. Do not touch the root of a knocked-out tooth or attempt to clean it, because this will kill the root and make replanting impossible. Store it in the socket or a glass of milk if that's not possible. ?? To replant it, the endodontist will use a stabilizing splint to keep it steady while it heals. The ideal dental injury situation is that you can get to the endodontist or an emergency dentist within minutes after the injury occurs. In the meantime, take over-the-counter pain medication, drink cold fluids, and bite down on clean, moist gauze. ?? #KnockedOutTooth #DamagedTooth #DentalInjury #GenevaIL #AllAboutYouDentalCare

Unless the dentist is an active TikTok user, it's not a good idea to get dental health advice from social media. ?? We've noticed a lot of dangerous DIY ideas popping up so let's take a minute to nip them in the bud. 1. "Healthy Soda" No soda is truly healthy for teeth, as the bubbles in soda come from acid and teeth are highly vulnerable to acid erosion. Sparkling water and balsamic vinegar (the combo in the trend) do not make a healthier soda alternative because that's just two acids mixed together! 2. "Veneers Check" Some TikTok users are filing their own teeth down to pegs prior to crown restorations. PLEASE do not do this. ??♂? It can lead to nerve damage or the need for root canals and can even lead to previously healthy teeth needing to be pulled. Teeth don't even get filed down before veneers anyway! 3. Home Hydrogen Peroxide Whitening Swishing 3% hydrogen peroxide is not a good way to whiten teeth. It can cause long-lasting sensitivity and gum irritation. Go to the dentist for whitening recommendations and good results! 4. DIY Braces It takes orthodontists years of education and training to learn how to effectively move teeth into their correct positions; this is not something a random TikTok user can figure out with rubber bands and paper clips. ?? DIY braces lead to bad results and sometimes tooth loss! #TikTokTrends #SocialMedia #DentalAdvice #GenevaIL #AllAboutYouDentalCare

Gum disease, tooth decay, and other oral health problems don't set in overnight. That's why it's so important to have regular checkups and to be diligent with daily oral hygiene habits. If it's been a while since the last trip to the dentist, here are the top 5 signs it's time to schedule a quick visit: 1. Persistent tooth pain or mouth sores: pain is the body's alarm system, so don't ignore it! Tooth pain rarely goes away on its own and can become much worse without treatment. A mouth sore that isn't healing on its own could also be a sign of infection or disease. 2. Bleeding gums could be the result of an overly aggressive flossing or brushing technique (this is why soft bristles are best), but it's rarely a sign of good gum health. Most likely, it's a symptom of gum disease and should be checked by a dentist. 3. If an old filling or crown becomes too worn out, damaged, or falls off, get to the dentist quickly so that it can be repaired before infection has a chance to set in. 4. A serious medical condition like diabetes or an eating disorder can impact oral health. So could a new prescription. 5. Chronic bad breath isn't just a source of embarrassment, it's often a sign of a more serious problem like gum disease or tooth decay. Bring that problem to the dentist for help! #DentalVisit #GumDisease #ToothDecay #GenevaIL #AllAboutYouDentalCare
