From Learning to Action: Closing The Gender Nutrition Gap in Sierra Leone Mohamed Samura was among 15 representatives from the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) countries visiting Viet Nam last year to exchange knowledge on closing the gender nutrition gap. Drawing on insights from the learning visit and the Community of Practice that Alive & Thrive/FHI 360 facilitates with the support from the Embassy of Ireland, Vietnam, he has continued his efforts to champion breastfeeding advocacy in his home country, Sierra Leone. A key component of his action plans is to establish workplace lactation facilities for both formal and informal female workers in diverse settings such as factories, public health facilities, and marketplaces. New partnership to address online gambling' impact on adolescent health. As we co-host our seminar today, "Online Gambling’s Impact on Adolescent Mental Health," ahead of the Nutrition for Growth Summit, we’re thrilled to announce a new partnership with OFDT - Observatoire fran?ais des drogues et des tendances addictives (the French Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction)?to assess harmful advertisement contents against the obligation to protect minors! ? Together, we are developing AGATTA*, an AI-powered tool that automatically detects gambling ads?and problematic content that may violate?French regulations. AGATTA builds on #VIVID, our virtual solution designed to identify transgressive advertising violations in alcohol, tobacco, and breastmilk substitutes. ? Why does this matter? In today's digital world, adolescents are constantly exposed to gambling ads, often showcasing tempting rewards. This overexposure increases the risk of early engagement and potential long-term harm, including problem gambling behaviors. ? Mothers voice their experiences to improve maternal and newborn care in Laos In 2024, hundreds of mothers in Laos shared their thoughts on the quality of maternal and childcare, with the number of respondents steadily rising. So far, over 400 interviews have been completed through the #BirthingExperienceMonitoringTool, gathering valuable insights on provider-driven practices around childbirth across 13 of Laos' 17 provincial hospitals. This feedback is essential in evaluating whether healthcare facilities meet and maintain the #BreastfeedingModelHospital standards, which is a local adaptation of the #CenterofExcellenceforBreastfeeding initiative. The implementation model and tool are part of broader efforts to address malnutrition of women and children across Laos, Cambodia, and Viet Nam, with support from the Embassy of Ireland, Vietnam. To facilitate this process, Alive & Thrive/FHI 360 is working closely with Catholic Relief Services Laos and other partners to develop and finalize an online version of the tool, making it easier to collect and store feedback. By 2025, we aim to support the Government of Laos in integrating the #BirthingExperienceMonitoringTool into routine monitoring across all birthing facilities, aligning with global guidelines and local standards. Working moms are nothing short of remarkable. They balance careers, family, and the countless struggles of motherhood—all while making tough choices every day. For midwives, this challenge is even more personal. While they dedicate themselves to caring for other mothers, they must also navigate the struggles of raising their own children. Channara understands this firsthand. Every day, she travels 54 kilometers to work and another 54 kilometers home to be with her children. When she had her first baby, a three-month maternity leave meant she couldn’t breastfeed exclusively for the first six months—a missed opportunity she deeply regrets. But with her second child, she found a solution—one that not only allowed her to continue breastfeeding while working but also paved the way for other mothers to do the same. Recognizing that women and girls are disproportionately affected by malnutrition and that gender inequalities are both causes and consequences of malnutrition among women and girls, Alive & Thrive is promoting sex and gender-transformative nutrition interventions that aim to achieve equitable social norms, structures, and policies. Maternity and paternity protection policies have a positive impact on women’s and children’s nutrition by allowing women to manage both their caregiving and income earning roles and promoting gender equality. In 2024, with support from Embassy of Ireland, Vietnam, Alive & Thrive identified policy gaps related to maternity protection through the World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative (WBTi) assessment in Laos, including a lack of provisions for breastfeeding spaces in workplaces and maternity protection for informal workers who are more vulnerable to poverty and malnutrition. In 2025, Alive & Thrive will work with Catholic Relief Services Laos and other partners in Laos to develop and implement policy advocacy to close gaps in the country’s maternity entitlements.
