Between 2017 and 2019, two scammers managed to defraud Apple by orchestrating an iPhone replacement scheme that cost the company around $2.5 million. How’d they pull it off? Their approach was far too simple. By spoofing the serial numbers of legitimate iPhones, the fraudsters tricked Apple into accepting counterfeit devices during returns. This made it appear as though the fake phones belonged to real customers under warranty. Over the course of two years, the scammers continued their operation by using fake aliases and setting up new mailboxes. It sounds almost too easy - because it was. In a new cultural trend known as “retrogaming,” video games and consoles that were released decades ago have soared in popularity, fetching high prices.
