The difference between work and play is one of perspective. Society teaches us that “work” is done in an office or at a computer. Work is the way to earn a living. Work is necessary, serious, and not fun. Work requires discipline and focus. On the other hand, “play” happens outside of “work.” Play is fun and frivolous. Play involves relaxation and laughter. When we hear the word "retirement," it's often seen as the end of the working road, a destination where we stop and rest. But what if we reframe our thinking and see retirement not as a final stop, but as the beginning of an exciting new journey? This perspective shift can transform how we approach our post-career lives. Historically, the concept of retirement was introduced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when life expectancy was much shorter. Back in 1935, when the Social Security Act was enacted in the US, the average life expectancy was just 61 years, and benefits were designed to start at age 65. Fast forward to today, and we see a drastically different picture. Advancements in healthcare and living standards have significantly extended our lifespans. According to the WHO, the global life expectancy now stands at 72 years, and in many developed countries, it exceeds 80 years. This means that a retirement lasting 20, 30, or even more years is becoming the norm rather than the exception. ?? This extended lifespan during retirement presents a remarkable opportunity. Instead of viewing retirement as just a time to stop working, we can see it as a whole new phase of life—a time to pursue passions, rediscover hobbies, volunteer, travel, or even start new careers.
