Kara Miller highlights physicians who have chosen to leave traditional primary care for concierge medicine and digs into the root causes of this trend. Her high level conclusion is "the US has not valued or financed primary care appropriately for decades…the undervaluing of primary care has led to burned-out workforce and primary care staff shortages." Great article on the ins and outs of Advanced Primary Care written by Christina Farr and Jared Augenstein and featuring a number of industry experts. We at Aligned, agree with the final point made in the article. "As we have spent more time of late with employers at various forums, many have described rising rates of cancer diagnoses and dropping rates of preventative health screenings...It would not be surprising to see a subset of large employers whittling down their health offerings to a small subset, and determining that primary care should be at the top of the list." We had the great fortune of engaging with benefit leaders from 60 of the most innovative employers. Across all three sessions over 2/3 of the benefit leaders said Primary Care was very important to their overall benefit strategy. Many of our conversations revolved around the rising cost trend and its impact on patient affordability and budgets, point solution fatigue, and the lack of primary care access patients face. These problems can all be solved by getting more members engaged with Advanced Primary Care instead of traditional fee-for-service primary care offered through broad networks.
