?Environmental Justice Fund (EJF) – A year of growth and significant impact (Espa?ol abajo)?
The EJF recently released its 2023 Annual Report, showcasing its achievements over the past year. EJF strengthens the environmental justice movement in South Africa by providing financial, capacity-strengthening, and networking support to community-based organizations advancing environmental justice.
The report highlights EJF’s participatory grant-making model, where activists from grassroots communities decide funding allocations. This approach addresses global power imbalances in philanthropy.
"Shifting power into the hands of the kinds of communities that EJF seeks to serve, not just in terms of where the money goes but also in terms of HOW we operate, is a key way that we can contribute to this", notes the report.
Key highlights include:
? Geographic and thematic diversity: EJF supports organizations across all South African provinces, focusing on remote areas with specific environmental threats. Projects address climate justice, the Just Transition, food sovereignty, biodiversity protection, and indigenous knowledge.
? Growth in support: EJF expanded from 12 to 21 organizations in 2023 and aims to support 35 by 2024.
? Focus on women and youth: The report emphasizes the strategic importance of supporting organizations led by women and youth, recognizing their critical role in environmental justice.

?Environmental Justice Fund – Un a?o de crecimiento y logros significativos
EJF publicó recientemente su Informe Anual 2023, destacando los logros del último a?o. El fondo fortalece el movimiento de justicia ambiental en Sudáfrica, brindando apoyo financiero, fortalecimiento de capacidades y redes a organizaciones comunitarias que promueven la justicia ambiental.
El informe resalta el modelo de donaciones participativas, donde activistas de comunidades de base deciden la asignación de fondos, abordando los desequilibrios de poder en la filantropía global.
"Trasladar el poder a las comunidades a las que EJF busca servir, no solo en términos de dónde va el dinero, sino también en CóMO operamos, es clave para contribuir a este cambio", se?ala el inform.
