Maine's community colleges play a critical role in training huge swaths of Maine's workforce. "In order for the Maine economy to reach its full potential, education will be key, and not just any one form of education. Colleges that teach the trades are just as important as liberal arts colleges, and students should leave no stone unturned as they prepare themselves for future careers, whether they are studying philosophy or plumbing. Learning a skilled trade is a satisfying, lucrative career path for many Mainers." In addition to degrees and certificates, Maine's community colleges offer a wide range of low- or no-cost short-term workforce training, developed in partnership with Maine employers like Puritan Medical Products , so students get the skills needed to enter the workforce fast. Thanks to The Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine's Workforce for coordinating MCCS short-term workforce training across the state.

It's one of the great professional honors of my life to represent Maine's community colleges. That's why it was such a pleasure this week to present the annual State of the Community Colleges address to a joint session of the Maine Legislature. I was proud to share our incredible accomplishments, our ambitious plans, our partnerships, and the stories of our incredible employees, students, and graduates with Maine's legislators. The big takeaway? "We are committed to building Maine's workforce in effective, innovative, and affordable ways," I told them. "We work tirelessly to be good stewards of these investments." Our primary tools to fuel that growth? Tuition-free college to attract recent high school graduates who weren't planning to attend college. New short-term workforce training programs for both new workers and existing employees. Expanding high-demand programs in healthcare, construction, manufacturing and more to support Maine industries. A commitment and a promise to be the best and most affordable place to study, learn, and work in Maine. We have too many supporters and partners to list here, but all of you have my deep gratitude.
