Fighting childhood cancer, one cup at a time.
关于我们
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of 4-year-old Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who was fighting cancer and wanted to raise money to find cures for all children with cancer. Her spirit and determination inspired others to support her cause, and when she passed away at the age of 8, she had raised $1 million. Since then, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement. Today, ALSF is one of the leading funders of pediatric cancer research in the U.S. and Canada raising more than $250 million so far, funding over 1,000 research projects and providing programs to families affected by childhood cancer. This week's featured childhood cancer hero is Lauren O’Malley! Lauren is a bright, strong and mature young woman. At 7 years old, Lauren was diagnosed with an inoperable, low-grade glioma in the center of her brain and on her optic nerve. After chemotherapy, she enrolled in a clinical trial with ALSF-funded oncologist, Dr Angela Waanders. Her tumor was stable for years, but the battle wasn’t over. Lauren then went on an MEK inhibitor drug to reduce her tumor and improve her vision, but it began growing back in 2022. Thankfully, a newly approved cell inhibitor drug reduced her tumor in size again! Today, Lauren is at West Chester University, pursuing a degree in nursing so she can help other kids with cancer. This #RareDiseaseDay meet Sonia— a brave young girl fighting a rare childhood cancer. Sonia was 11 years old when she was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, which only has a 15-30% five-year survival rate when found in the lungs. Despite treatment, the tumors kept returning, prompting Sonia to move her treatment to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), an Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) Center of Excellence (COE) grant institution. COE institutions receive funding to support the development of clinical trials and to train young researchers in clinical trial design. At DFCI, Sonia met Dr. Steve Dubois, who leads their COE grant program. Sonia began a new trial funded, in part, by ALSF, for a targeted drug used in combination with chemotherapy. It’s worked. This fall, Sonia finished her first semester at college — studying bio-chemistry, so someday she can help kids just like her. (Yellow ??) Hats off to our partner, This Week Health, for leading a great example in the fun ways you can fundraise for childhood cancer research! The team initiated The Yellow Hat Club in 2023 as a way to amplify Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation's mission during This Week Health's conference seasons. This Week Health has raised over $220,000 to fight childhood cancer with initiatives including The Yellow Hat Club, and they have a goal of reaching $350,000! We thank the team for all that they do to help kids with cancer.
