At the November 4th meeting, the Alexander County Board of Commissioners approved a bid for the Bethlehem water tank project. The board awarded the project to Locke-Lane Construction of Stony Point, which submitted the low bid of $4,758,200. Ben Faulkenberry, Alexander County Attorney, presented information about the project. The total project cost is $6,813,600, which includes a 750,000-gallon elevated water tank, 1,110 linear feet of water lines, a future pump station, planning and design, and engineering, The majority of the project will be funded by state grants totaling $4,648,248. Alexander County Government will participate in Operation Green Light for Veterans again in 2024. The county administration building, services center, and courthouse park will be illuminated in green from November 4-11 as part of Operation Green Light, an initiative between Alexander County Government, the National Association of Counties (NACo), the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers (NACVSO), and the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC). Alexander County Department of Social Services is accepting Angel Tree applications for Christmas assistance from October 14 through November 8. Trena Riddle, DSS Economic Services Program Administrator, said applicants must reside in the home with the child and live in Alexander County. If the child attends public school or daycare, the parent/guardian must apply with the school/daycare rather than with DSS.

The Alexander County Department of Social Services will offer a Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) to help non-SNAP recipients who lost food during Hurricane Helene. DSS is working in coordination with the NC Department of Health & Human Services and the US Department of Agriculture. Current SNAP recipients are not eligible.

A FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance team is opening a Mobile Registration Intake Center in Alexander County to assist homeowners and renters who experienced damage or loss due to Hurricane Helene. The FEMA team will have office hours this Thursday and Friday, October 17-18, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Alexander County Services Center (151 West Main Ave, Taylorsville). They will assist with registration, questions, referrals, and more. No decisions will be made on-site. Homeowners and renters are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to receive much-needed assistance. #FEMA #Hurricane #Helene #assistance
