Nice to be back home after seeing so many friends and colleagues at #NYCW24 in New York, the #GIINImpactForum2024 in Amsterdam and #SOCAP24 here in San Francisco, with a wonderful Oregon investor farm+forest tour in between. Thanks for making time to talk investment in climate, biodiversity & rural communities! Investor interest in #biodiversity is growing rapidly. Negative screening on this theme is a great start, now let's channel capital into tangible wins in high-conservation-value landscapes. Achieving durable outcomes depends on more than asset ownership, contracts, policies, and markets. After decades and centuries of resource extraction, rural communities need to see tangible benefit as well, and the world needs their skills, capacity, and care in stewarding land and water. The secret sauce to impact manager fundraising success? Focus on the financial case, be ready to go deep on themes (like climate, biodiversity, and rural economies), and seek out opportunities for knowledge sharing. These were just a few of the tips shared on our panel at the Impact & Transition Investor Summit in New York this morning. Thanks to Jyoti Aggarwala for moderating and to my co-panelists Christina Anzel and Etiene Ekpo-Utip for sharing insights from their experience. It was a privilege to take some time to share lessons learned from our success at Alder Point Capital Management so far. Onward! #ImpactSummit24 #ImpactInvestment #PrivateMarkets

Last week I joined colleagues from Meridian Institute, TransCap Initiative, and many others to explore opportunities for row crop diversification in the U.S. Midwest. We took a systems based view to identify where investments can lead to wider adoption of agroforestry, oilseed cover crops, and oats. So what is needed? Investments in R&D, infrastructure, and policy change. Plus a focus on supporting farmers with risk management products, technical support, and knowledge sharing. Thanks to Builders Vision and McKnight Foundation for sponsoring this great event, to Kurt Kimber and Wil Crombie for hosting us at their farms, and to my co-participants for showing up with energy, creativity, and expertise. If you are interested in this topic, I highly recommend spinning through TransCap Initiative's "Financing the regenerative agriculture transition in the Midwest" map: https://lnkd.in/gtxtcwMJ

It was a treat to facilitate a table discussion about this case study at the Regenerative Food Systems Investment Forum earlier this month. We focused on the farmer and farmworker perspective of VC-financed regenerative agriculture technologies. The main themes? Ensuring that new tech delivers what it promises and that farmers who adopt new technology are supported with adequate training. Thanks to Eva Goulbourne and Connie Bowen for creating this interactive breakout and thanks to Sarah Nolet for a great summary. Connie also did a terrific write-up on Farmhand Ventures' substack: https://lnkd.in/gwPkSNAU #RFSI #impactinvesting #regenerativeagriculture #agricultureisforpeople

As conference season for those in the natural capital and impact investing worlds stays red hot (Climate Week! RFSI! GIIN! SOCAP!), I wanted to thank again my panelists for the CANOPY conference last month in Portland, OR: “Climate Risks for Timberland Investors: Recognizing Nature-Based Risks, not just Nature-Based Solutions.” Thank you David Walters, Jessica Halofsky, Phil Cottle for your insights. The panel was part of a nascent public conversation on climate risk as a growing, urgent theme for real assets investors/managers and the communities in which they operate. As fire season ends (a record breaking 2M acres burned in my home state of Oregon this year), we now witness the catastrophic losses of this year’s hurricane season. While nature-based solutions play a critical role in climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience improvements are only becoming more critical for what were once inherently 'downside protected hard assets.' Questions our panel left with the audience:

Hard to imagine a better way to spend a couple of days than in the field with my Alder Point Capital Management co-founders, Chris Larson and Spenser Shadle. Even better that part of our time was spent in the woods with friends and colleagues, talking about ecological forest management to benefit climate, biodiversity, and rural communities.
