A BIG Partnership announcement for us! We are working with Wiley to bring our accessible interactives to general chemistry in Knewton Alta. Such great alignment in our vision for learning. “We were particularly impressed with the accessibility of Alchemie’s tools, which is so important in reaching all students. These interactives will provide direct benefits to students who use our courseware, helping build STEM skills and improve long-term learning.” -Lyssa Vanderbeek https://lnkd.in/gJX6JZgy

Program Manager of ED/IES SBIR - a seed funding program for new game-changing edtech innovations driving impact in education.
The potential for #edtech #assistivetechnology to provide ALL students the opportunity to learn independently and to personalize learning is real. Thank you Andrea Sherman for highlighting the groundbreaking socially significant project by Julia Winter at Alchemie which employs #machinelearning #AI to guide blind and low vision students (and all students) as they learn chemistry and #STEM through hands on methods. The U.S. Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences (ED/IES) SBIR program seed funded this project at the concept phase beginning in 2020, and since the #SBIR programs at NSF, NIH, and HHS/NIDILRR have provided follow-on awards to extend the innovation. A few short years later Wiley is now partnering with Alchemie to commercialize this product at scale. #accessibility
??A partnership between Wiley and Alchemie is bringing new accessibility features and visualization tools to students who are blind or have low vision (BLV), enabling successful completion of online chemistry course assignments without outside help ?? Alchemie's tools are now exclusively integrated in Wiley’s Knewton Alta ‘Principles of General Chemistry’ course, such as a keyboard accessible control panel, real-time audio reading, color contrast and screen magnification. ??Alchemie CEO and founder Julia Winter said: “When they make a move, it tells them what they did and tells them what’s on the screen. So any visuals a sighted person would get, the screen reader user can get that through their screen reader.” ??“Ensuring that all students have an equal playing field when they’re coming into these early courses is so important. If a student drops out or fails chemistry there, they may not pursue a career in science,” said Lyssa Vanderbeek, Wiley’s VP for courseware. ??Wiley's general chemistry courseware is an adaptive assessment program used by about 15,000 college students, mainly incoming freshmen. Plans are underway to apply Alchemie’s tools to all of Wiley’s chemistry programs, which serve around 100,000 students, according to Vanderbeek. ?? ?? The Mechanisms app is moving to the web! The Mechanisms App was first released in 2018. Created as a part of a National Science Foundation (NSF) project. The app includes 265 puzzles, covering two semesters of organic chemistry. Since its launch, it has been used in hundreds of college classrooms and has had over 137,000 distinct users. It's now time for a major update. In 2025, the unique interactive arrow-pushing interface of the App will be transformed to a new web-based format. Our first release will transform the content of the App to a web platform. Instructors will be able to use this content with their school's learning management system. We will also be able to deliver the learning system directly to students. This Web tool is less game-based (there are no achievements and visual awards of stars), and more game-inspired (exploration and hypothesis testing is at the core of the user interaction). If you want access to the App (for free!) reach out to us through the link below ?? We will follow up afterwards with an access code for you and your students (if you are an instructor). https://lnkd.in/gcyQNNfH

"Born Accessible" learning technology for chemistry.
Such a journey! "Unprecedented access to online visualization tools for chemistry;" Alchemie's partnership with Wiley bringing innovative accessibility to STEM education. At #BCCE 2018, Cary Supalo highlighted our development and design blind spot, igniting a transformative journey. From multisensory learning with computer vision to dynamically-generated alt text for interactives, our focus on intuitive access for screen reader users is reshaping the landscape of accessible learning. With 6 research studies involving blind students and their teachers, 3 published papers, and the support of 7 federal grants, we are driving innovation in creating "born accessible" learning technology for STEM. Tipping hat to those who have supported us: Amanda Miller, Michelle Renda (+ Wiley's amazing team), Edward Metz + Institute of Education Sciences, Rajesh Mehta, Lindsay Portnoy, PhD + National Science Foundation (NSF), Tony Beck + National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), Brian Bard + NIDILRR, Jennifer Nakamura, Shari Gardner + SRI Education #STEMeducation #Accessibility #Innovation #Alchemie #Wiley #Partnership #SBIR

"Accessible-by-design and usable by all." Thanks to National Science Foundation (NSF) support, Alchemie has created unique accessible interfaces for digital learning tools for STEM. With this new Journal of Chemical Education paper we introduce these interfaces, and the co-design process that was important in their development. We report results from three different studies - one with blind users, one with over 300 sighted college students, and one with chemistry faculty. Congrats to new authors Alexa Urrea Debra Nischik and nicole kada! Plus Sarah Wegwerth and Gianna Manchester. So much more to come with our newest NSF grant!
