Last Friday was “National Tradesmen Day”. Celebrated annually on the 3rd Friday of September, National Tradesmen Day was created in 2011 by Irwin Industrial Tools, “to celebrate all that they do to contribute so meaningfully to our lives in so many ways”. It’s a day for appreciating and honoring the men and women who build and develop our country’s infrastructure, and it’s not an exaggeration to say that Tradespeople are the reason our county keeps running. Without these skilled professionals, our homes and commercial buildings would fall into disrepair, or never have been built in the first place. The roads on which we drive, and their maintenance which we take for granted, would cease to function. We would have no clean water, or controllable plumbing, heating, ventilation, or electricity. We would very quickly be living with the technology and accommodations which we moved away from hundreds of years ago. During the Pandemic, Tradesmen were considered “Essential Workers”, with good reason. Without their knowledge, expertise, and efforts, we would be living in a much less safe and sanitary world than we do now. Last Thursday was "International Day of Charity". In lieu of this holiday, declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012, we'd like to take a moment and recognize an organization that is very dear to us. The Cardboard Playhouse Theatre Company, created by Doug Montoya and Kristin Berg in December 2004, is one of the only children's theatre companies that "casts children on their ability to perform, not their ability to pay". The Cardboard Playhouse is 501(c)3 non-profit organization, keeping itself operational exclusively through Ticket Sales, Grants, and Donations. For a member of our Leadership Team, Michael "Mater" Carr, this Organization is incredibly important to him. He's on the Volunteer Committee, has two children in the organization, regularly ushers during the Shows, and helps the events run smoothly. He says "The skills, and sense of unity and camaraderie that the kids develop, are second to none. From public speaking, socialization, and team building, to a sense of community and family during their formative years, it's made a huge positive impact." His first involvement with the Cardboard Playhouse was in 2015, when his daughter starred as part of the Ensemble in "Frog and Toad". At this Show, there were around 80 attendees. Now, their Shows are consistently sold out. Mater still remembers the first show he saw that was sold out, the Show "The Lion King". This was a beautiful perspective check for him on just how far the Cardboard Playhouse, and the talented kids, had come. Some of the audience who attend don't even have family ties to the production. They merely heard how talented the Cast and Crew were, and had to see it for themselves. Mater's hope for the future of the Organization is "sustainability". Continuing to cast kids based on their ability to perform, not their ability to pay. Continuing to foster a sense of "one-ness" that stems from everyone working with passion towards a common goal. Continuing to support and uplift, giving opportunities to those who otherwise might not have them. All of this and more is what drives the Cardboard Playhouse Theatre Program, and we're truly honored to be a part of it!
