Off the back of Uluu's recent panel appearance with us at SXSW Sydney, where co-founder Michael Kingsbury shared insights on how their carbon-negative plastic alternative made from seaweed is addressing the 400 million tonnes of plastic produced each year, the WA-based startup is redefining what’s possible in sustainable innovation. ? Recent trials have proven that their seaweed-based pellets can replace plastic in existing manufacturing equipment. Additionally, they have achieved two reputable TüV AUSTRIA certifications, ensuring that their products break down naturally in both garden compost and seawater. In partnership with WWF Indonesia, Uluu is also working to establish ASC-certified seaweed farms as part of the Seafood Savers program — aimed at enhanced sustainability and responsible practices within Indonesia’s fisheries sector. ? And just last night, Uluu won across two categories — Emerging Innovation and the Great for the State Platinum Award — at the WA Innovators of the Year awards, celebrating Western Australia’s brightest innovators and creative minds! That's a wrap for the #FutureCouncil at the United Nations General Assembly 79 in NYC! As you can imagine, it was a wild adventure. The children got to witness the full pageantry of global power and were given remarkable access to go inside the General Assembly hall plus the very exclusive Security Counsel - which is where countries in conflict hold their discussions. It was clear that above all else, global governance and geopolitical discussions became normalised for them. They became real and tangible - these were real chairs, at real tables, sat in by real people who made big decisions on behalf of others. None of us can know what impact this experience will have on the children, or what may come of it in the years and decades ahead. With just 0.7% of funding going to women-founded businesses in FY22, despite women founding 22% of Australia's startups in what was one of the country’s biggest funding years, "The emphasis needs to be on the opportunity, rather than rehashing challenges," says Scale Investors’ managing partner Samar Mcheileh of her mission to close the gender gap in Australia's VC industry, as one of the masterminds behind #EquityClear.
