Alaska NSF EPSCoR improves Alaska's scientific capacity by engaging in research projects supported through National Science Foundation and state funds. EPSCoR is commencing "Fire and Ice," a five-year project to study climate-driven changes to Alaskan wildfire regimes and coastal ecosystems.

    Alaska EPSCoR is offering support for students, postdocs, and faculty to apply for support to participate in the Sitka Sound Science Center's "Scientist in Residency Fellowship" (SIRF) or "Scientists in the Schools" (SIS) programs in spring 2025. Both programs offer an excellent experience that grounds researchers in the community of Sitka, Alaska. You can read about the experiences of previous Scientists in Residency here, such as Alaska EPSCoR researchers Brian Ulaski and Julie Schram. You can see examples of past SIS units here. ?     ?? Award announcement: Interface of Change Year 1 Seed Awards Alaska NSF EPSCoR is excited to announce the first round of research seed awards under our project "Interface of Change." The goal of Interface of Change is to bring together researchers, Gulf of Alaska community members, Tribes, educators, and entrepreneurs to investigate climate change impacts on harvested and farmed marine species, and on the lives of Alaskans who rely on them. We are soliciting proposals for seed grants from University of Alaska researchers and students, as well as non-UA affiliated research collaborators and adjacent organizations to carry out new and innovative research projects that support Interface of Change goals. Seed award projects should address themes relevant to the EPSCoR Interface of Change project. The maximum amount for research seed awards is up to $20,000 per award. For student research seed awards, the maximum amount is up to $4,000 per award.     Today is the official start of our new NSF EPSCoR Research Infrastructure Improvement Program Track-1 project "Interface of Change." Interface of Change expands upon the coastal research from Fire & Ice, digging into how the effects of glacial melt affects marine species of concern to Gulf of Alaska communities. Researchers and community partners will co-develop research and adaptive community solutions to sustainably harvest and farm marine species in a changing climate. ??     Student and staff seats are still available for IGNITE: Individual Growth & New Ideas Through EPSCoR/INBRE, a free, annual professional development workshop organized by Alaska EPSCoR and Alaska INBRE. At this time, faculty who register for IGNITE will be waitlisted. IGNITE offers inspiring keynote speakers and practical, targeted tracks for undergraduate students, graduate students, staff and faculty. Session topics include grant writing, giving effective presentations, budgeting, science communication, career paths, faculty promotion and tenure, mentoring, and publishing. IGNITE will take place in Anchorage, January 8-9, 2024, and the Hotel Captain Cook. The deadline to register for IGNITE is December 11, 202. Seats are filling up fast, however, so register now!
