A first-generation commercial fisher, Murphy has willfully chosen a way of life dictated by the rhythm of the salmon run, the capriciousness of the sea and the relentless demands of running a small fishing business. Her story, now immortalized in the short film The Grace, directed by filmmakers Natalie Berger and Moira Fett, is as much about her individual grit as it is about the sustainability of Alaska’s troll fishery and the intimate connection between fishermen and the natural world. https://lnkd.in/dZR6HXpV

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a small device that provides a better way to collect data without slowing down the work that matters!! No, it's actually F/V Pacific Sojurn skippered by Michael Offerman! And Michael is using Deckhand onboard! This season, we’re seeing our National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant-funded project in action helping commercial fishermen collect critical data—without the hassle of paper logs. A few years ago, Deckhand was chosen as a tool to make onboard data collection easier for the people doing the work and the data collection: the fishermen. In collaboration with the Alaska Longline Fishermen's Association, North Pacific Fisheries Association, The Deep Sea Fishermen's Union of the Pacific, International Pacific Halibut Commission, NOAA Fisheries (Alaska Regional Office), and most importantly, dozens of commercial fishermen in Alaska, RTD developed a Deckhand workflow application that rewrote the daily fishing logbook system—proving that digital reporting and digital data entry can be both fast and effortless. With Deckhand, fishermen simply tap buttons as they go. At the end of a trip, they can easily submit their reports —no extra paperwork, no lost time. Because data is critical, but it shouldn’t be a burden. This year, we’re equipping 50+ new fishermen in Alaska with Deckhand, continuing to build a system that lets them focus on what they do best: fishing. We're grateful for the ongoing support of users like Michael and so many others, as well as project partners who are benefiting every day from using the Deckhand platform as their data collection tool for harsh, salty environments. #dataentry #datacollection #fisheriesmanagement #frontlinedata
