Alante portfolio company Circ? just announced their strategic partnership with Birla Cellulose - with a commercial offtake agreement of at least 5,000 metric tonnes of pulp per year for 5 years from their first commercial facility. Birla Cellulose is a leading manufacturer of viscose fibers. Check out the linked Vogue Business article - Circ CEO, Peter Majeranowski, comments on the partnership “This momentum is what will enable brands to make bolder commitments [and] suppliers to accelerate their transformation,” says Majeranowski. “With suppliers like Birla committing to the circular economy, it’s clear that we’re no longer talking about distant sustainability goals. Our material uses 99.7% less water, no additional land and produces 82% less CO2e than cotton. Let's make fashion better.” Fibe is a material science company developing a ground-breaking new fiber made from potato haulm (stem) waste that has the look, feel, and performance of cotton without the negative environmental and social impact. Leveraging an abundant waste stream, production requires 100% less land, generates 82% fewer GHG emissions, and uses 99.7% less water than conventionally grown cotton. And because most potato haulms must be removed to landfill or burned in-field (composting them risks spreading disease), Fibe’s ability to convert potato haulms into fiber avoids GHG emissions and actually improves growers' profitability. ? Alante Portfolio Impact Highlight - Matereal: Let’s live in a Matereal World “Matereal has developed breakthrough chemistry for a new and better polyurethane, historically one of the toughest plastics to decarbonize. Polyurethane is not only carbon intensive, it’s toxic. From clothing to cars to our homes, we are surrounded by these harmful plastics everyday.?Matereal has invented a methodology to marry the benefits of traditional polyurethane - its versatility, durability, and affordability - with modern chemistry to remove the petrochemicals and toxic isocyanates.” Matereal is a biomaterials platform whose first breakthrough product is Polaris, a bio-based, non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) that is biodegradable and recyclable. Polaris is a drop-in alternative to traditional polyurethane, a petrochemical used across dozens of industries for adhesives, coatings, foams, and elastomers. Conventional polyurethanes (PU) are derived primarily from non-renewable, petrochemical sources, are energy intensive to produce, and release volatile organic compounds and other air pollutants.
