The Alabama Opportunity Scholarship Fund (AOSF) is a new scholarship organization formed to help implement the Alabama Accountability Act. The Alabama Accountability Act is a tremendous first step toward helping public education fulfills its potential of equal opportunity. At the very heart of this, legislation is providing better educational opportunities to children who need help the most. AOSF was developed to provide educational opportunities to those families who otherwise could not afford them. AOSF along with the Alabama Accountability Act hopes to become a valuable component of education, empowering low-income parents and guardians to select schools that best fit their children's academic needs. Alabama's public school teachers and principals are doing heroic work. The fact is, however, not all children learn the same way or in the same environment. What works for one child may not work for another. This program helps alleviate the financial barrier for economically disadvantaged children so that they can find a school that works for them. AOSF will award scholarships to eligible, low-income students, to pay for private school tuition or transfer fees to a non-failing public school.

#FactFriday: Alabama ranks third on the 2025 EdChoice Friedman Index! The index evaluates private school choice programs across the country, giving a score based on three criteria: ?? student eligibility; ?? flexible use of program funds; and ?? funding parity compared to public school per pupil spending. The index measures how accessible private education choice opportunities are for families in each state. It also acts as a roadmap—highlighting specific policies that policymakers and advocates can support to expand educational choice and better serve students. As we’ve seen in Alabama with the Choose Act, families are eager for these opportunities, and policies like these make a real impact. Are a growing number of teachers rethinking private school choice? Rick Hess explores why educators, who have traditionally been skeptical of school choice policies, may see the following benefits: ? More flexibility – Many teachers want greater autonomy in how they teach, and private school settings often provide that freedom. ? Better alignment with values – Some educators seek schools that match their teaching philosophy or personal beliefs, which choice programs can offer. ? Support for their own families – Just like other parents, teachers want the best educational fit for their own children, and school choice can provide access to options that public schools may not. As the conversation around educational freedom continues to evolve, it’s crucial to listen to teachers' perspectives on how choice policies can support both educators and families. https://lnkd.in/gnqbCrAU #PrivateSchoolChoice #ESA #TaxCreditScholarships #K12Ed #EdPolicy #WednesdayWisdom

"So there are a lot of levers that states can use. What you want is for high-quality private schools to participate, but you can’t impose so many regulations that the best schools opt out." Ashley Berner https://lnkd.in/euhCC-YT #AlabamaCHOOSEAct #K12ed #ThursdayThoughts

A common misconception about school choice programs is that they lack accountability. However, as this piece highlights, testing mandates are more common than many realize. Schools participating in the CHOOSE Act will be required to administer end-of-the-year standardized tests and report their data to the state, ensuring transparency and measurable student outcomes. Accountability and choice can go hand in hand—empowering families while maintaining high academic standards. https://lnkd.in/eD3ckPDB #SchoolChoice #PrivateSchoolChoice #AlabamaCHOOSEAct #K12Ed #SchoolAccountability
