Thank you to Melanie Hogan and Robb Taylor for inviting Greg Cochran and Mayor Tony Haygood (past ALM president) to speak on WVAS’s 90.7 Perspectives show this week. They took a deep dive into sharing what goes into making our communities vibrant places where people want to live, work, shop and invest their time and resources amidst the current challenges our state is facing. Mayor Haygood said, “When you think about things that we sometimes assume will be there, and all of a sudden they’re not there then people get nervous.” Our new #LiveLocallyAlabama campaign is just one of many ways we are working to remind the public and legislators of the value of municipal services and how to support their communities. Cross collaboration with citizens and all levels of leadership is essential to building a brighter future for our 465 cities and towns. The voice of Alabama's municipalities since 1935.
关于我们
The Alabama League of Municipalities (ALM) is a nonpartisan membership association of more than 450 cities and towns in Alabama. Established on May 15, 1935, as a voluntary association of Alabama's cities and towns, ALM is the primary lobbying advocate for Alabama municipalities, representing its members to the Alabama State Legislature, in the U.S. Congress and with numerous administrative agencies. ALM's services include training for municipal leaders; conferences and meetings where municipal officials and employees can share their views and experiences; and outreach to Alabama citizens regarding the operations of their municipal governments. Its mission is to empower municipal government through advocacy, training and the advancement of effective local leadership. ALM is headquartered in Montgomery and overseen by an executive director and a board of directors that consists of a president, vice president, five elected municipal officials from each of the state's seven congressional districts as well as an executive committee composed of all past presidents still in municipal office. Additionally, seven standing committees develop and implement ALM policies and procedures: State and Federal Legislation; Administration and Intergovernmental Relations; Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources; Community and Economic Development; Transportation and Communication; Public Safety and and Human Development.

Councilmember Bandy-Freeman is one of our most engaged members. Great testimony!
“We discuss policymaking, how to develop communities as small as Tarrant, ways to bring businesses and effective job opportunities for our citizens…we need to learn from others." City of Tarrant, Alabama Councilmember Veronica Bandy-Freeman is one of the many attendees who has had a rewarding experience at NLC’s Congressional City Conference, the ultimate event for local leaders to engage on policy, learn from experts and make connections. In attending NLC events over the years, Councilmember Bandy-Freeman has learned how to maintain city trust during infrastructure failure, create major new investments through youth employment programs, make the case for afterschool programs and receive guidance on grant writing. She’s also brought back solutions from the Big Ideas for Cities event each spring. There's still time to join us at #CCC25 in Washington, D.C. from March 10-12! Learn more and register now at ccc.nlc.org.

?ALM continues to grow in 2025! We want to officially welcome our newest team members – Annabel Patton and Mikal Webb. Mikal recently joined the legal team as an associate counsel and will also assist with the League’s lobbying efforts. A Montgomery native, Mikal earned his B.A. from Huntingdon College in 2018, a M.A. from the University of Alabama in 2021 and his J.D. from the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law in 2024. Prior to entering the legal profession, Mikal spent time teaching mathematics at the collegiate and high school levels. Annabel also recently joined the League as a part of the member services team. She is the first person to give our guests a warm welcome in her role as receptionist. Annabel is originally from Carrollton, Georgia but recently moved to Prattville. She is a graduate from the University of Georgia and still enjoys traveling back to Athens for some football games. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, crocheting, reading and has recently started playing pickleball! We are glad to have both of them at the League!

?Advocacy Day 2025 is still buzzing in our minds! Among the principal issues for us this year is our commitment to working with policymakers to improve public safety and health care opportunities to support vibrant communities in Alabama. ??Public safety is a top priority for our members. We are continuously collaborating with state leaders to ensure we not only improve recruitment and retention efforts but also give our officers the support and resources they need to keep the public safe. ??The League also supports increased funding and statewide policy changes to provide accessibility to health care for all Alabamians; improve retention and recruitment of health care professionals; and expand health care services at existing facilities. Check out the two panel discussions we hosted on public safety and health care below. Public Safety Panel: https://lnkd.in/e5yk6Ftj The State of Health Care in Alabama Panel: https://lnkd.in/eiti-iZm
