Daughtrey City is named in honor of Judge Martha Daughtrey. She was the first woman Assistant U.S. Attorney, the first woman to teach as a faculty member @vanderbiltu Law School in 1972, and the first woman to serve on the Tennessee Supreme Court in 1990. She is currently the Senior Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. We empower Tennessee's promising young women to become and remain civically engaged leaders.
关于我们
We empower Tennessee's promising young women to become and remain civically engaged leaders through experiential learning and relevant, inspiring growth opportunities. Since 1947, Volunteer Girls State, a program of the American Legion Auxiliary, has invested in more than 25,000 young women in Tennessee by providing the tools they need to become confident, informed citizens and voters. The nonpartisan program is offered annually to more than 550 of Tennessee’s rising high school seniors and is centered on citizenship, teamwork, and fostering a love of God and country. Experienced volunteer staff and counselors — each one a program alumna — help guide participants, or “citizens,” through the week as they elect city, county, and state officials, engage in party politics, debate legislation, and collaborate in a host of fun team activities.

67 days until ALA VGS 2025, where leadership, learning, and lifelong friendships begin. Who’s counting down with us? ??? #ALAVGS2025 #CountdownToVGS

In today’s city spotlight, we highlight Burn City named for Febb Burn of Niota. Febb was the mother of Harry Burn, the Tennessee state legislator who cast the deciding vote for women's suffrage upon receiving his mother's telegram, which read "Hurrah, and vote for suffrage." The vote solidified Tennessee’s role in history as the Perfect 36 - the final state needed to ratify the 19th Amendment. Febb and Harry Burn are depicted in a statue in downtown Knoxville commissioned by the Knoxville Suffrage Coalition. Historic photo via @knoxvillephoto. Say hi ???? if you’re a Burn City counselor or alumnae! ??#alavgs2025

As we count down to #alavgs2025, we’d like to introduce you to the amazing women who serve as the namesakes for each of our 14 cities. These ladies have each made noteworthy impacts on the state of Tennessee through acts of service, bravery, perseverance, and personal accomplishment for the benefit of others. Some are names you may already know, and some are the lesser known but mighty women who have impacted our state in countless ways. As our 2025 delegates arrive on campus this year, each girl will be assigned to one of these 14 cities, so get to know these heroines of ALA VGS, the state of Tennessee, and beyond and learn about your future home for the week of Girls State! First up: Armstrong City! Armstrong City is named for American civil rights leader Patricia Jenkins-Armstrong. She was just 17 years old when she trained under Rev. James Lawson in tactical nonviolence. As a college student at @tennstateu, she began participating in Nashville’s sit-ins, stand-ins, and sleep-ins. In 1961, she joined other Freedom Riders, who set out to desegregate the U.S. interstate system by riding buses through the American South to challenge segregation laws, and who were often met with violent attacks and arrest. We have been honored to feature Ms. Jenkins-Armstrong as a compelling and inspirational speaker at several ALA VGS sessions. :anchor: Hi to our Armstrong City citizens and counselors! #ALAVGS2025
