In Issue 8, Serge Nasr unpacks how political and social constructs labeled marginalized groups as "mad" to exclude them from society, perpetuating harmful stereotypes and discriminatory systems. By revisiting the roots of mental health institutions and their lasting impacts, the piece challenges us to critically examine how far we’ve come—and how far we still need to go—in creating equitable mental health care for all. https://lnkd.in/gnMrdCdM

How did language, meant to capture suffering, lose its power? In her latest op-ed for our column “Silenced Lands, Powerful Voices,” Al Rawiya Editor-in-Chief Michelle Eid?writes about how words, once perhaps powerful tools for action, have become vessels, used, ignored, and abused within the context of Palestine and Lebanon’s suffering. https://lnkd.in/g2dQ3VqV

Call for Pitches: Al Rawiya, Issue IX Deadline December 10, 2024 Al Rawiya invites writers and creatives to submit pitches for our upcoming issue, where we explore food in and beyond the plate. Food carries the weight of history, embodies acts of resistance, builds social bridges, and holds memories of home. For our 9th issue, we’ll journey into the flavors, aromas, and traditions that define Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, and Syria—delving into how food is adapted, preserved, and transformed within local and diasporic contexts. How do dishes connect us to our pasts, our families, and those who came before us? How is food used as a tool of resilience or protest? How do flavors and traditions shift between regions within the same country? What does food mean to Levantine communities? We welcome pieces that bring out the cultural, social, historical, and political dimensions of food. Send your pitch idea to [email protected], along with a bit about yourself and a sample of your work if available.
