Last week, Administrative/Presiding Judge Annalisa S. Williams and Magistrate Lisa Bradley had the pleasure of welcoming Girl Scouts of North East Ohio Troop 91336 to our courthouse for a visit. The Scouts asked wonderful questions! Judge Williams and Magistrate Bradley explained the importance of making good decisions at a young age and how court staff members work together to keep our community safe. We enjoy working with Girl Scouts all across Summit County!

One year ago today, the Akron Municipal Court began a new chapter as we opened our doors at 172 South Broadway Street in Downtown Akron. Prior to last year's move, we held hearings in the Harold K. Stubbs Justice Center. Thank you to the community and all court users who shared our excitement as we embraced a new facility. Since we opened, we installed a new Little Free Library outside our courthouse and have hosted several events in our expanded space.

Summit County Valor Court, led by Judge Susan Baker Ross, takes part in an annual event to honor veterans who lost their lives due to invisible wounds of war. Every day, an average of 22 veterans take their lives in the United States. In an effort to promote awareness of this tragedy, 22 dog tags are placed on Witness Trees throughout the state on a daily basis. Here are photos of the dog tags that are featured in a tree near both the Summit County Court of Common Pleas- General Division and the Akron Municipal Court.

Join us this Friday at the Glendale Cemetery. We will co-host an in-person tribute on Friday, November 8, 2024 beginning at 11:30 a.m. for Civil War Veteran Lewis P. Buckley. The ceremony will take place in the Civil War Memorial Chapel on the Glendale property followed by a walking tour of the cemetery. Members of the press and public are welcome to attend the event taking place at 150 Glendale Avenue in Akron. Lewis P. Buckley was a Civil War Union Army Officer. During the Civil War, Mr. Buckley was commissioned as Captain and Commander of Company G, 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861 at age 56. He was promoted to full Major on May 29, 1861. He served until his regiment was mustered out on August 27, 1861. Buckley re-enlisted on August 31, 1861 as Colonel and Commander of the 29th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving in that capacity until forced to resign due to failing health on January 26, 1863. After returning to Akron, Buckley participated in Summit County military affairs through the end of the war. He died in 1868 and is buried in Glendale Cemetery. The G.A.R. Buckley Post Memorial is located near his grave. Mark Perkins, a history enthusiast who is active with the Kent Civil War Society, will describe Mr. Buckley’s journey as a veteran. Steven Kaut, Glendale Cemetery Chief Operating Officer, will describe the importance of the Civil War Memorial Chapel. Kaut will also lead the walking tour. The Chapel is not heated, so please dress appropriately based on the day’s weather forecast. Greeters will point guests in the proper direction for parking and entry into the Memorial Chapel upon arrival.
