Tabitha and Tori Smith share more than a last name. These sisters, who both currently work at Akron Children’s, are on a journey to becoming registered nurses (RNs) together using the hospital’s education assistance program. The desire for both to pursue a career in nursing stems from Tori’s childhood battle with stage 4 Ewing Sarcoma and the treatment that she received at Akron Children’s. ? “Akron Children’s has been a huge part of our lives,” Tori said. “Not just in helping us become nurses, but in giving us the chance to be a part of something bigger—to help other families the way they helped ours.” ? Akron Children's staff can now display their pronouns on their badges, continuing our efforts to spread the message that respect of pronouns is a basic human right. Employees were invited to the Power of Pronouns, an interactive educational session on proper pronoun usage and what Akron Children’s is doing to respect them for staff, patients and families. The event was also the premiere of our pronoun badge backers, made possible by the Gay Community Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation.
