Construction was recently completed on the acclaimed Living Breakwaters resiliency project in New York City, designed by SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC and partners. Widespread destruction in the wake of Superstorm Sandy brought newfound focus on mitigating sea level rise and storm surge along the southern shoreline of Staten Island. AKRF provided environmental review and permitting for two HUD-funded coastal and social resiliency enhancements within a single project site: Living Breakwaters and the Tottenville Shoreline Protection Project. The $111 million project includes 2,400 linear feet of breakwaters. Photo by SCAPE and Ty Cole #livingbreakwaters #climate #resiliency #statenisland https://lnkd.in/eh2ynpQq

AKRF is proudly supporting SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC with environmental services to help transform Connecticut's Manresa Island into a new public destination.
Manresa Island, a former industrial power plant site in Connecticut, is transforming into a 125-acre thriving and accessible park designed by SCAPE. The park unlocks 1.75 miles of Norwalk's waterfront access for the first time in nearly 75 years. Manresa Island holds centuries of history and ecological significance. For 60 years, it was home to a power plant that caused significant ecological concerns. Today, the island has grown to over 125 acres due to industrial fill and is undergoing a natural resurgence, with thriving ecosystems and rich biodiversity. SCAPE's design for the park includes water access, public swimming, playspace, recreational and ecological experiences, and a network of new walking paths. The plan incorporates remediation strategies that will revive Manresa’s coastal ecosystems and preserve its post-industrial landscapes. This one-of-a-kind park is advanced by the non-profit organization Manresa Island Corp. Beginning in early 2025, SCAPE and Manresa Island Corp. will guide a community engagement process to advance a design that prioritizes sustainability, resilience and dynamic ecological design. Today, we’re celebrating a big milestone: Governor Kathy Hochul announced the completion of Living Breakwaters. “Climate adaptation for the next century requires bold thinking on how people and nature can coexist in cities, and resilient design that combines nature-based infrastructure and community stewardship,” said Kate Orff, SCAPE Founding Principal. “Living Breakwaters revives our harbor ecosystems, reduces risk, and inspires action. This project has been 10 years in the making and has involved hundreds of dedicated collaborators and community members. I’m excited to build on what we’ve learned together to accelerate implementation of nature-based infrastructure at many scales to meet the moment.” Living Breakwaters consists of eight breakwaters off the South Shore of Staten Island that are designed to attenuate waves, combat erosion, and reduce risk to the community along the shoreline. They also provide a range of habitat spaces for oysters, fin fish and other marine species. Congratulations to the team!
