It was Akerman’s honor to sponsor UNC Chapel Hill's 32nd Annual Stone Memorial Lecture featuring Dean Patricia Timmons-Goodson. She was first Black woman on the North Carolina Supreme Court and a former President Obama appointee to the US Commission on Civil Rights. Dean Timmons-Goodson delivered a powerful presentation titled “Law, Education, and the Arc of the Moral Universe.” Hosted by UNC Chapel Hill's Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Research in Black Culture and History, this lecture series celebrates remarkable women for their work, scholarship and service. She is the Dean and Chief Academic Officer at the North Carolina Central University School of Law, the second oldest historically Black law school in the nation. Akerman partners Jasmine Pitt, Rob Wall, and Donald Pocock, and our Chief DEI Officer, Dr. Cassandra D. Caldwell, Ph.D. attended this historic event.

A Texas federal court has struck down the DOL’s 2024 Overtime Rule, citing the FLSA’s intended focus on “duties” not “dollars” to determine whether an employee meets the executive, administrative, or professional exemption. Employers will no longer have to choose between increasing pay to the January 1, 2025 minimum salary threshold or reclassifying their employees to nonexempt for those workers otherwise performing exempt duties.
