关于我们
Six graduate students from across the U.S. were selected to serve as an advisory board to AJPH’s Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Alfredo Morabia, and to provide innovative opportunities for student engagement in public health. Dr. Morabia established the AJPH Student Think Tank in 2015 to give a space for student perspectives within journal initiatives and activities. The AJPH Student Think Tank utilizes this page to connect with public health students and share news of upcoming student engagement opportunities.

??My new study is out!?? Our latest research analyzes U.S. state health agencies' Twitter activity from 2012 to 2022, offering insights into a decade of public health communication. Key Findings: ?? A huge surge in tweets in 2020—largely sustained through 2022—marks a significant investment of time and effort. However, we also saw fragmentation in communication that began as early as 2018. Here’s why this matters: 1?? Twitter became a critical public health communication tool during the pandemic. States tweeted at unprecedented rates (some over 20 tweets/day in 2020-2021) and saw a significant increase in audience engagement compared to pre-pandemic levels. 2?? Communication and engagement levels don't fall neatly along Red/Blue political lines or population levels. Top contributors and record engagement came from diverse states like Delaware, North Carolina, Florida, Alabama, and Wisconsin. 3?? We saw less coordination over time. State-specific hashtags increasingly replaced nationwide standards like #flu and #HIV, eroding coordination and searchability. Mentions and retweets of CDC accounts also declined starting in 2018, pointing to a larger disengagement trend. This isn't necessarily good or bad. We need more qualitative research to figure out what shapes public health communication practices. The big picture: We poured immense resources into a platform that’s now hostile to public health efforts. This study captures just a snapshot of what we’ve lost in Twitter’s transformation and raises critical questions about the political and strategic forces shaping public health communication. The way forward: ?? Regulation of social media companies ?? Investment in public health communication infrastructure ?? Research on the intersection of politics and public health Full study here: https://lnkd.in/gE9tJawK What are your thoughts on public health’s future in the evolving social media landscape? Let’s discuss! ??

We received 293 submissions for the AJPH Student Think Tank of 2025. Probably the largest number of submissions ever. It is going to be a tough process to select 6 persons for the 10th team since 2016! The first in-person meeting will be on February 13-14, at the American Public Health Association headquarters in DC. The map below shows where the 54 previous students were studying when they served. Wouldn't it be great to have had at some point students from all the states?
