We hosted our inaugural pitch competition, Next Generation Taste & Texture Technologies (NGT3), on February 5th awarding three start-ups with cash prizes, along with exclusive access to our team of experts for the first-place winner. Through this pitch event, we sought to highlight entrepreneurs developing new functional proteins, flavor compounds, enzyme systems, and next-generation sweeteners from around the world. Cellibre, The Protein Brewery, and MeliBio were our third, second, and first-place winners, respectively. MeliBio utilizes plant science and precision fermentation to produce honey and other bee products without bees. Their first product, Mellody plant-based honey, is now available nationwide. Kokumi substances, such as glutathione, found in garlic and onions, make foods taste, smell, and feel better by enhancing not only umami but also salty and sweet flavors. This innovative research is revolutionizing how we experience food by improving the mouthfeel of low-fat, low-sugar, and plant-based products, and enhancing the savory notes in your favorite dishes. Our team members recently experienced true kokumi and umami in a company-wide chili cookoff across all of our locations, and the results were impressive and flavorful. In honor of World Wetlands Day on February 2nd, we’re sharing facts and important information about wetlands to raise awareness of their significance. We began our wetland restoration project last year, and through our commitment to sustainability and conservation, we restored over 130 acres of cropland along the Des Moines River near our facility in Eddyville, Iowa.
