New from AJI fellow Katherine Swartz, who secured an exclusive NOTUS look at the new resolution from Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez. “My seat was drawn to be a red seat,” said the representative. “I think rural America and the trades have really suffered under single-party control.”

Democracy needs a new generation of journalists.
关于我们
The Allbritton Journalism Institute is a one-of-a-kind institution in Washington: a nonprofit educational organization that is training the political journalists of the future — and has created a new publication called NOTUS to accomplish that goal. Every September, we welcome a cohort of 10 early-career reporters to D.C. for a two-year fellowship. Fellows are paid $60,000 per year to take classes with some of the country’s best journalists and to write for NOTUS, where they work alongside a staff of established reporters and editors to cover politics, policy and government.

Welcome, Violet Jira! cc: NOTUS
My first few weeks as a fellow with the Allbritton Journalism Institute?and a reporter with NOTUS?have been nothing short of incredible. I jumped straight into national political reporting right before the election, and will start congressional reporting on Capitol Hill next week. I’ll be following the New York delegation for the next two years. If there’s anyone you think I should connect with, drop a line. Follow me on X @JiraViolet to follow my work and catch up on my early bylines here:?https://lnkd.in/dZ-SqUQY?

We are so proud to welcome Kevin D. Grant as our inaugural director of development! Thanks also to all of our new followers who believe in nonpartisan accountability journalism about our leaders in Washington. We do this work for you.
I joined Allbritton Journalism Institute, the nonpartisan nonprofit home of NOTUS, because every American deserves to know what their elected officials are doing in Washington, how decisions are being made and how those decisions may affect them, their families and their communities. We all deserve to live a bit more at ease knowing that world-class journalists are working each day to hold those leaders to account —?and tell us what's really going on. That was true on November 5. It will be true on January 19. And it will be true on January 20. God willing, it will be true for many years to come. If you agree, I invite you to subscribe to our newsletter to follow the work of AJI and NOTUS' incredible team of reporters and editors. And if you are so moved to explore a donation to our 501(c)(3), please reach out and I would be delighted to have a conversation. Thank you, all.

The lead image in this The New York Times story shows AJI fellow Torrence Banks asking Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the outgoing minority leader, whether he'd support Elon Musk and RFK Jr. having cabinet positions. McConnell declined to answer, saying, “I’m not gonna get into that subject.” cc: NOTUS

“We’re going to see an absolute avalanche of some new shit happening every day, and being really disciplined and strategic about how we pick our fights, how we all go in on those to make sure that they break through … is going to be a necessity." - Mary Small, chief strategy officer, Indivisible Project AJI fellows Mark Alfred,?Amelia Benavides-Colón?and?Samuel Larreal team up for NOTUS.

Haley Byrd Wilt provides an essential look ahead for NOTUS: "Republicans have flipped?control of the Senate?to their side with several key states yet to be called leaning in their favor ... Those results mean Trump will be able to get judges, Cabinet nominees and other executive appointments confirmed in the Senate without much pushback — even for controversial picks like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Elon Musk ... While a Democratic House would put a giant pause button on legislation and make regular government spending deals much more acrimonious, it would not stop Trump from being able to transform key pieces of government."
