Democracy needs a new generation of journalists.
关于我们
The Allbritton Journalism Institute is a one-of-a-kind institution in Washington: a nonprofit educational organization that is training the political journalists of the future — and has created a new publication called NOTUS to accomplish that goal. Every September, we welcome a cohort of 10 early-career reporters to D.C. for a two-year fellowship. Fellows are paid $60,000 per year to take classes with some of the country’s best journalists and to write for NOTUS, where they work alongside a staff of established reporters and editors to cover politics, policy and government. An insightful writeup from Angilee Shah and Charlottesville Tomorrow, my local news organization (and thanks for the NOTUS shoutout!): "We want to know how you and your communities are working together to respond to what’s coming from the White House. We want to know how these changes are affecting your life, work or organizations that you are part of — good or bad." https://lnkd.in/e7hNE7He

Excellent reporting and data analysis from AJI fellows Mark Alfred and Helen Huiskes for NOTUS:

Through our Washington Bureau Initiative, we share NOTUS reporting with local newsrooms. And it's resonating with readers across the country: "Our readers have shown great interest in the Department of Government Efficiency cuts – and how they’re affecting California," wrote Scott Linesburgh at Stocktonia. "This story by NOTUS reporter Mark Alfred was our most-popular story Wednesday." https://lnkd.in/eU_GsHDm

New from Violet Jira for NOTUS: "The largest number of employees were terminated within the Office of Postsecondary Education, where at least 326 Federal Student Aid employees were let go. FSA is the largest provider of financial student aid in the nation; it oversees the disbursement of?about $120 billion in aid every year?and manages oversight of the use of those funds."

NOTUS’ Jasmine Wright: “Does this administration still consider Canada to be a close ally?” Press Sec. Karoline Leavitt: “Canada is a neighbor, they are a partner. They have always been an ally. Perhaps they are becoming a competitor now...[Pres. Trump] believes Canadians will be better served economically, militarily, if they were to become the 51st state.”

Was fun to talk about covering Trump 2.0 with Bret Baier earlier this week at the Allbritton Journalism Institute.
"The Ukrainians called and said it was still on…My process is laying out a blueprint where I’m going to go with my questions, and think about how he’s going to answer them…He was nervous. His whole team was nervous.” Behind the scenes insights from Bret Baier on his big interview with President Zelenskyy. One of the many great conversations at NOTUS's event this week on covering the second Trump administration. Thanks to Josh Dawsey, Major Garrett, Dasha Burns, Ali Vitali, Jonathan Karl, and Jasmine Wright. You can watch the the whole event here: https://lnkd.in/eG_x44AC

SCOOP: The Trump administration is planning to close two buildings that house the Alaska and Hawaii volcano observatories. They are also firing all of the people at the GSA who have the knowledge to relocate those observatories. Here's my latest for NOTUS:
