Getting very excited for opening day of the AISH - Academy for International School Heads course -- "Transformative Learning Spaces (for Transformative Learning) that I'm co-teaching (April 7 to May 5) with Dr. Marta Medved Krajnovic, the Head of School for the Western Academy of Beijing. Spirit of the Course: How might we help Heads of International Schools around the world *creatively prepare* to lead possible space design projects in the future by focusing on the 'WHY' (culture, community, learning, values, experiences, relationships, etc.) before diving into the 'WHAT' (spaces, objects, architectural contracts, budgets, furniture, etc.)? Formal Course Description: "In this course, we explore the dynamic relationship between physical learning environments and transformative educational practices. Designed for school leaders and educators, the course examines how intentional space design can foster creativity, collaboration, and deeper learning experiences. Participants will dig into the questions of 'why' to engage in a redesign of learning spaces, 'who' to engage with and 'how' to lead transformative change in both spaces and learning practices. We will hear from renowned architects and designers, experienced heads of school as well as analyze case studies of educational institutions that have successfully transformed their environments. We will also help participants think about what's next for them when it comes to developing realistic and sustainable plans to create inspirational and engaging learning spaces in their communities." ? In addition to the remarkable privilege of working beside Marta -- one of the most inspiring school heads in the world -- we have the good fortune of bringing several remarkable global designers and international school leaders into the online course to inspire and challenge participants along the way: - Rosan Bosch, Founder of Rosan Bosch Studio - Peter Brown, FAIA, Principal of DLR Group - Randy Fielding, Founder of Fielding International - Fiona Young, PhD Young, Founder of architecture_with - Scott Witthoft, author of "This is Prototype" and co-author of "Make Space" - Christian Talbot, President / CEO of Middle States Association - Erica Borsa, Founder of studio vapore - Janecke Aarn?s Aarnaes, Head of School of Universal American School of Dubai - Eileen Niedermann, Director of ISPP - International School of Phnom Penh Penh - TBA: more to come

Words have power. We use them to inform, to educate, to illustrate, to persuade, to debate, to encourage, to comfort and to reassure. Unfortunately, they are also used to divide, to target, to manipulate, to intimidate, to scare and to expose. When people in positions of power use words for the latter purposes, our work as international educators becomes even more important, and urgent.?? ? As we watch world leaders face challenges and opportunities we may not have imagined, the implications of their behaviour for future leaders are vast, and the role models we choose to emulate will play a crucial part in shaping new approaches to leadership.? https://lnkd.in/emvvpysf

Last week I posted an essay to our BIG Questions Institute newsletter subscribers that felt really vulnerable to send. I named and responded to a Wall Street Journal opinion piece that was riddled with inaccuracies and flawed assumptions. My dilemma was and is: ignore the problematic piece so it doesn't get attention and quietly goes away, or name it so that colleagues can have some guidance for response? Amidst the dilemma, this particular newsletter essay has gotten the most "Thank You's" from school directors of any post in a long time, so it seemed worth sending. I can publish the 10 Principles (and welcome suggestions for making them stronger) without referencing the Opinion piece, but will leave my original post here for now, and welcome feedback. https://lnkd.in/e-nTYCGp
