The U.S. military is using one of its main data analytics and common operational picture tools as part of its response efforts to aid in Hurricane Helene relief. Several active-duty components, defense agencies and the National Guard are aiding in the relief efforts as requested by the states affected under what’s known as “defense support to civil authorities,” which allow the military to be employed domestically when asked. The Maven Smart System — an AI-enabled platform for geospatial visualization of data that was designed for use by combatant commands and other units to facilitate battlespace awareness, global integration, contested logistics, joint fires and targeting workflows — is being deployed to aid in the relief efforts. https://lnkd.in/eT-7M4Bq

The Department of Health and Human Services is working on a new strategic plan for the use of artificial intelligence across the entire breadth of its mission, the department’s top AI official said Tuesday. Micky Tripathi — HHS’s acting chief AI officer and its assistant secretary for technology policy — said at the NVIDIA AI Summit in Washington, D.C., that the AI strategic plan should arrive sometime in January and that it will span “the entire, you know, sort of breadth of what the department covers.” https://lnkd.in/esehJUjP

Budget constraints on research and development are limiting science and technology efforts across the federal landscape, according to a quadrennial White House report released this week and a top Biden administration official. The Quadrennial Science and Technology Review Report, unveiled Monday, noted that federal agencies are working to manage current funding for federally funded R&D, but the administration is in a position where it must “continue advocating for robust” levels. During an American Enterprise Institute event Tuesday, OSTP Director Arati Prabhakar echoed concerns about the current state of funding for federal R&D, as well as its infrastructure and impact on global competition for the nation. The government has to “do some fixing” to make sure that “we’ve got facilities and infrastructure that work,” she said. https://lnkd.in/eMr9SmcT

A Senate bill that would task the National Science Foundation with overseeing a multimillion-dollar competition on artificial intelligence innovations now has a House companion from the leaders of the chamber’s AI task force. The AI Grand Challenges Act from Reps. Jay Obernolte, R-Calif., and Ted Lieu, D-Calif., announced in a press release Wednesday, pairs with the May bill from Sens. Cory Booker, D-N.J., Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., and Mike Rounds, R-S.D., in calling on the NSF director to create and administer contests that incentivize researchers and entrepreneurs in AI research and innovations. https://lnkd.in/e7wG87Wc

OpenAI said it has disrupted more than 20 operations and networks over the past year from foreign actors attempting to use the company’s generative AI technologies to influence political sentiments around the world and meddle in elections, including the United States. In some cases, the actors attempted to use ChatGPT and other OpenAI tools to analyze and generate social media content, creating fake articles for websites, debugging malware, writing biographies and performing a host of other tasks that support online influence efforts. However, despite a surge of malicious use, the technology’s overall impact appears to be more complimentary than game-changing. https://lnkd.in/evMzj9wy

The Defense Intelligence Agency is close to getting the green light to operate an artificial intelligence-enabled tool on the U.S. military’s Secret Internet Protocol Router Network, according to a senior official. The spy organization is rolling out the Machine-assisted Analytic Rapid-repository System, or MARS, to replace the decades-old Military Intelligence Integrated Database with a cloud-based capability that can use AI to help analysts sift through and make sense of big data. https://lnkd.in/drHQXcRz

The Energy Department could be a key force in counteracting the “profit motive” driving America’s leading artificial intelligence companies, the agency’s second-in-command said in an interview. DOE Deputy Secretary David Turk told FedScoop that top AI firms aren’t motivated to pursue all the use cases most likely to benefit the public, leaving the U.S. government — which maintains a powerful network of national labs now developing artificial intelligence infrastructure of their own — to play an especially critical role. https://lnkd.in/dfbPAaYm
