Democratic leadership on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee sees “real opportunities” for bipartisan artificial intelligence work that could unearth the kind of inefficiencies in government that the Trump administration says it wants to target. But contact with Elon Musk’s DOGE to move that ball forward hasn’t materialized so far. David Weinberg, staff director for the Democrats on the powerful tech-focused panel, told FedScoop on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Elastic Public Sector Summit that ranking member Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., and other minority members are “hoping for more transparency” from DOGE and anxious to “hear more about what they’re thinking.” https://hubs.li/Q03c_FjG0

California state Sen. Jerry McNerney this month introduced the “No Robo Bosses Act,” which would bar California employers from solely using artificial intelligence tools or other automated decision-making systems to make hiring, promotion, discipline or termination decisions without human oversight. McNerney, a Democrat who co-chaired the Artificial Intelligence Caucus and authored the AI in Government Act, said the new bill, which would apply to both the public and private sector, is intended to balance technological innovation and guardrails. https://lnkd.in/e-NAThgC

The General Services Administration on Thursday revealed a new generative AI tool designed to boost efficiency and help automate repetitive tasks. The platform, now available to GSA staff, comes amid anxiety that the Department of Government Efficiency might use artificial intelligence to surveil or replace federal workers, who are being laid off in large swaths across the government. https://lnkd.in/eeVNPrWy

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro on Friday shared preliminary results from the state’s ChatGPT pilot program, noting that the generative artificial intelligence tool was a “job enhancer” for most employees, saving each worker an average of eight hours per week. During a press conference Friday, Shapiro shared successes from the state’s first-in-the-nation pilot program to integrate generative AI into government services, which was created by an executive order he signed January 2024. The state originally paid for 50 licenses of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise product. Shapiro said the program has grown to include 175 employees across 14 agencies. Participants were provided training and face-to-face support. https://lnkd.in/eM7WBRXV

Officials leading the Pentagon’s Chief Digital and AI Office are exploring possible exemptions to the ongoing hiring freeze that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently instituted as part of a broader effort to shrink the department’s civilian workforce, according to an internal unclassified email obtained by DefenseScoop. Margie Palmieri, the longtime senior CDAO official who’s temporarily heading the office until the Trump administration names a new chief, sent an email to her colleagues Thursday that provides insight into how implementation of President Donald Trump’s DOGE directive across the federal government is impacting the military’s artificial intelligence hub. https://lnkd.in/e-MUK45Y
