Thanks Sebastiaan Swart and Marcel du Plessis for this excellent Uncrewed Surface Vehicle training workshop!! These USV will help us fill gaps in air-sea observations needed for weather, climate, and ocean prediction.
?? Reflecting on my Experience at the USV Workshop 2025!?? I was fortunate to attend a workshop on Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) hosted in Cape Town (24-26 March). We explored how USVs can be leveraged to assist us in how we conduct ocean research and monitoring. This immersive experience provided a deep dive into different types of USVs that's on the market, their components, the plethora of different sensors available, and it was topped off with live demonstrations and a look forward to future emerging technologies and use-cases. One of the most thrilling moments was being randomly selected to board a small boat and help deploy the Sailbuoy! ?? The conditions were rough, we were met with choppy waters, strong waves, and plenty of seawater splashes but the deployment was a success! Back at the workshop, we tracked the Sailbuoy in real time as it navigated the area of interest (Benguela Jet) where it will continue collecting data for weeks to come.. ?? My key motivation for attending? There's immense potential for the use of USVs for autonomous data collection in challenging environments and to assist with ocean monitoring. The insights gained will be invaluable as I work towards developing a robust PhD research proposal! Beyond the hands-on experience, the workshop allowed me to connect with experts and peers already leveraging USVs in marine science. Their insights on applications, opportunities, and challenges of USVs were incredibly valuable. A huge thank you to the organizers and contributors (Sebastiaan Swart, Marcel du Plessis, University of Gothenburg, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), @SAEON, Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) & Sea Technology Services) for putting together such an engaging and inspiring event! I look forward to applying what I learnt to my future research projects. #USV #UnmannedSurfaceVehicle #OceanResearch #MarineScience #OceanMonitoring #PhysicalOceanography #SailBuoy #Workshop #ClimateChange #AutonomousTechnology #Sustainability #FuturePhDResearch
