This Throwback Thursday, we head way back to our December 1999 issue. Our cover star was Varig, the former Brazilian flag carrier that had recently undergone a period of change and emerged as a stronger airline. This edition also included an overview of the past and present history of Germany’s second airline, LTU. Our airport star that month was East Midlands, as we uncovered how the facility was growing its cargo business. And we headed to the flight deck of an Air France Airbus A320 on a flight to Lisbon in our second part looking behind the scenes at the French flag carrier. Plus, there was all the usual news from around the world and the chance to win a session in a British Airways flight simulator at London/Heathrow. Do you still have your December 1999 edition of Airliner World? Be sure to share your memories of the magazine with us. ?? #airlinerworld #throwbackthursday #commercialaviation

Who remembers London European Airways? Well, the London/Luton-based start-up commenced operations forty years ago today! The carrier was established in late 1984, purchasing an ex-British Air Ferries Vickers Viscount 806, G-LOND (c/n ?257), to be used twice daily service to Amsterdam. Shortly after, a new five-times-weekly service to Brussels was added. However, neither route lived up to expectations, and just under a year after commencing operations, the airline was grounded. At the same time, Ryanair was looking to expand its operation outside of Ireland and soon planned a £630,000 rescue package for an 85% stake in the carrier. Keeping its name, London European was relaunched in April 1987 and introduced its first jet equipment, a ROMBAC One-Eleven 516RC, G-BNIH (c/n 406), 'The Spirit of Europe.' Ryanair passengers from Dublin could connect to London European’s reinstated services to Amsterdam and Brussels at Luton. Sadly, losses continued, and the airline was rebranded as Ryanair Europe in January 1988. It returned to its London European roots again in early 1991, operating charter services across Europe for its parent company. When Ryanair decided to switch its London operation to Stansted, the writing was on the wall for the small airline, and on May 1, 1991, London European Airways closed its doors for good. ??: Wikimedia Commons #avgeek #aviationhistory #onthisday #UKaviation #Ryanair

End of an era? One of the last few remaining active Boeing 747SPs has been spotted parked up at Marana/Pinal Airpark by our contributor Noah Gregory. P&W Canada 747SP-B5, C-GTFF (c/n 22484) was used as a engine testbed, but ADS-B data shows the 747 flew from Montreal/Mirabel to Tucson on January 7, before being positioned to Marana later that day. It's not clear what fate awaits the aircraft, but its sistership, 747SP-J6 (c/n 21934), hasn't flown since the end of August last year. This means of the 45 747SPs ever built, none are currently active. ??Aviation Image Network/Noah Gregory #Boeing747SP #Aviation #Boeing #Flying #Airtravel #Avgeek #Boeing747 #Boeing

An American Airlines Boeing 787-9 (N840AN) was intercepted by Italian Air Force Typhoons today. Flight 292 from New York/JFK to Delhi made a uturn over the Caspian Sea and was diverting to Rome, but was intercepted on the way. The air force said its Typhoons “took off on alert to identify and escort a commercial aircraft headed to Delhi which had reversed course towards Rome/Fiumicino airport due to a report of a presumed explosive device on board”. ??Italian Air Force
