Another day in the field is better than a day in the office, Cape-Atlantic UAS Test Range edition: This was a busy week for me and my wingman Raymond Adams starting on Sunday when the LiquidPiston came to town to fly at the Cape May Airport. What a professional group to work with! It always amazes me to see these young, exceptionally skilled crew including Alex DiJoseph and Connor McCaffrey, led by the seasoned Bob O'Brien handling challenges and making changes without skipping a beat. There are some incredibly talented, professional people on this team and it was a pleasure to watch the successful flights they accomplished. This was also made possible with the support of our friends at the Delaware River and Bay Authority and Cape May County. The month of June kicked off with some flight testing at the Cape May Airport under the Cape-Atlantic UAS Test Range with my wingman Raymond Adams on hand. The test range was established under the University of Alaska Fairbanks ACUASI and the Federal Aviation Administration. Airde Elevated Thinking has been selected by the FAA's Office of NextGen to directly support the Advancing Flight Autonomy Research (AFAR) project under the SETIS contract vehicle. Airde will provide the primary subject matter support to the project team on this five-year project. What is AFAR?: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), ANG-C53, has a requirement to advance autonomy in aviation and integrate technology to support the evolution of future aviation operations into the NAS. This work includes maximizing efficiency of future operations to ensure current Communications, Navigation and Surveillance advances coincide with proposed conceptual operations for emerging technologies and autonomous vehicles. Autonomy has been discussed in various working groups within the United States federal government between the DOT, NASA, and the FAA to interject autonomy into various forms of transportation.
