Air Camp

Today the Air Camp Board of Trustees, staff and volunteers remember and celebrate our dear friend and a founding Executive Director, Tom Severyn, who sadly passed away on January 28th. Tom helped launch Air Camp after a distinguished 33-year career as a Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Air Force Civilian employee. His service career culminated as Acting Director of the F-22 Raptor Systems Program Office. Along the way, he logged over 300 flying hours as a flight test engineer for the 4950th Test Wing, duty as Project Manager and Director of Propulsion for the B-2 Stealth Bomber development and production, and a long list of other high-profile government civilian and contractor positions. Tom brought to Air Camp passion and vast expertise, ensuring students and teachers could find a clear path to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education and careers for decades to come. He was an enthusiastic and ready volunteer for Air Camp sessions until mid-2024, when a cancer diagnosis forestalled his many and hugely consequential contributions. He will be sorely missed and we will all hold him and his shining example in our hearts.

Air camp is thrilled to welcome Jesse Steiner as the newest member of the Air Camp family. Dr. Steiner brings 30 years of experience in education, including 14 years as a school superintendent, and has led the development of innovative virtual and in-person learning experiences. “We are delighted to welcome Dr.Steiner to the Air Camp family as our Executive Director,” said Dr. Vince Russo, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “Dr. Steiner’s experiences and proven record of visionary leadership make him the ideal choice to guide Air Camp as we expand our reach and impact to inspire the next generation of STEM innovators and leaders.” Welcome, Dr. Steiner, and thank you for leading our mission as we #reachnewheights!

Did you catch our very own Tim Carey in yesterday's Dayton Daily News? Tim is now the district- wide STEM elementary school coach in Xenia where he?helps teachers develop creative ways to incorporate STEM projects into their regular lessons. Carey doesn't take the summers off, but instead has tirelessly served as an Air Camp counselor for almost as long as we have been in operation! Congratulations on reaching #newheights, Tim, and thank you for all you do with Air Camp and beyond to ignite?STEM learning in future leaders!?
