The men and women of the 559th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron’s C-5 Super Galaxy depot team achieved one of the greatest program depot maintenance turnarounds in history. At its worst, the C-5 line had not produced a single aircraft on-time in 6 years and aircraft overhauls were 566 days late, $28 million over budget, 43,000 maintenance hours above plan, and included 360 days of non-maintenance time in which the aircraft wasn’t even touched. The squadron was determined to increase production line throughput, improve quality, and produce all required aircraft by applying theory of constraints principles and art of the possible methodology. As a result, they produced 328,000 maintenance man-hours, met full production requirements for the first time in 6 years, and produced the highest number of aircraft in over a decade by reducing process timelines 40%, slashing budget overruns 52%, and generating 211% more revenue. All told, the squadron returned aircraft to field units 287 days faster, eliminated the need for a $187 million supplemental depot capacity contract, and increased operational aircraft availability by 27%. The professionalism and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the proud men and women of the 559th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron reflect great credit upon themselves, Air Force Materiel Command, the United States Air Force, and the Department of Defense.
