Congratulations to Dr. Kenneth S. Obenberger, a Senior Research Physicist at AFRL's Space Vehicles Directorate! Obdenberg has been named a recipient of the prestigious Arthur S. Flemming Award for his innovative work in radio wave propagation and plasma physics. Obenberger's pioneering research has significantly advanced the understanding of space plasma disturbances. According to Obenberger, AFRL’s new technique could be used for numerous remote applications, including monitoring/warning of eruptions of remote volcanoes such as in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. Long before European explorers sailed to North America, Native American and Alaska Native Nations made this land their home. Their story is of resilience, survival and determination to preserve cultures, identities and ways of life. On #IndigenousPeoplesDay, we honor that perseverance and courage and show our gratitude for the many contributions that Indigenous peoples have made to our world.

From additive manufacturing to liquid metal work and bio-cement, our American defense innovators are creating cutting-edge technologies to support our nation’s military and civilian operations. During a visit to Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property learned more about how the public-private partnership between the U.S. military and U.S. businesses is a force multiplier in the efficient use of resources to develop and commercialize innovations. USPTO is committed to supporting more innovation from all Americans. Learn more about resources and programs to support creators, inventors, and entrepreneurs: https://bit.ly/45SluEw.

Shanel Fultz is the deputy director of the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Small Business Office. Her leadership role focuses on representing AFRL by creating and improving relationships with external businesses, academia, non-profits and other potential partners. Fultz states that the AFRL mission is important because “we are an organization that thrives on research and development, and those technologies and innovations go directly to supporting the warfighter, working to serve our country, and deterring our advisories.” Growing up in the Dayton, Ohio area, she described the experience as “growing up just outside the fence” due to her close proximity to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. She attributes that closeness to being a part of why she eventually chose to work for the United States Air Force. When asked the question, what does Hispanic Heritage month mean to her Fultz states, “Hispanic Heritage Month speaks to me as a Mexican American and is very powerful. It allows us as Hispanic people to share our cultures, stories, and contributions to this country.” Shanel advises others who are looking to have a similar career to “be a continuous learner, get out there, be present, be proactive, and connect with people, which showcases you and helps your career.” #AFResearchLab | #HispanicHeritageMonth | #EmployeeSpotlight

It's World Space Week! ?? Navigation Technology Satellite-3, or NTS-3, is an experimental platform designed to demonstrate technologies to increase resiliency, robustness and reprogrammability of Position, Navigation, and Timing functionality in space. NTS-3 will be the Department of Defense’s first experimental, integrated navigation satellite system in nearly 50 years. NTS-3 builds on the legacy of NTS-1 and NTS-2, which were launched in the 1970’s, and it will push the boundary of today’s space-based position, navigation, and timing technology to pave the way for a more robust, resilient, and responsive architecture for satellite navigation technology. ???
