?? Member Spotlight: Sophie Sharafi,PhD ?? Home Institution: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory ?? Background: Sophie holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Delaware, specializing in multiscale modeling and characterization of 3D-printed high-temperature PAEK polymer composites. She has expertise in continuum-based multiscale modeling, finite element analysis, and experimental characterization of advanced materials. ?? Research Focus: As a postdoctoral researcher at PNNL, Sophie investigates fracture toughness and lifetime assessment of polymeric materials. Her work explores key factors influencing adhesive bonding and ultrasonic welding of carbon fiber-reinforced polymers, with applications in the automotive industry. She also integrates multiscale modeling and structural integrity analysis to enhance material performance. ?? Relevance to AIM EFRC: Sophie's research directly supports AIM EFRC’s focus on sustainable manufacturing and processing. Her work on ultrasonic welding and adhesive bonding contributes to reducing material waste, improving recyclability, and minimizing energy-intensive production methods. Additionally, characterization results from her studies will help develop predictive models for optimizing joint performance. ?? ???Member Spotlight: Bowen Cao ???Home Institution: Clemson University ???Background: Bowen is a PhD student in the Mechanical Engineering department at Clemson University. Her research focuses on the structural properties of composite materials at the nanoscale using molecular dynamics simulations. ???Research Focus: Bowen is developing and validating a coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) model for filler-polymer systems, specifically carbon-PC, to investigate static and dynamic interfacial behavior. Her work bridges molecular dynamics and continuum models, improving predictive capabilities for thermoplastic composites' thermo-mechanical behavior. ??Relevance to AIM EFRC: Understanding composite materials at the molecular level can lead to stronger, more elastic, and thermally stable materials. These advancements are crucial for energy-efficient transportation, durable renewable energy infrastructure, and high-performance energy storage systems. ???Hot off the Press!??? We’re kicking off #TechTuesday?with some exciting news - the first AIM EFRC publication of 2025!??? Title: A novel laser light absorption model for composite materials in the context of laser ultrasonic testing Journal: Optik - International Journal for Light and Electron Optics Read the full paper here:?https://lnkd.in/gHsRvp52 ???What’s this about? This study presents a novel analytical model for understanding the interaction between laser light and fiber-reinforced composite materials. Unlike conventional models, this approach considers the distinct optical properties of both the matrix and the fibers, providing more precise insights into how laser light is absorbed by composite materials. The findings are striking: the new model predicts a temperature spike at the fiber-epoxy interface, offering an explanation for experimental observations that traditional models failed to capture. It clarifies why Nd:YAG lasers exhibit a lower ablation threshold despite having minimal absorption in the epoxy layer. Additionally, the model significantly improves our understanding of how laser light, across different wavelengths, interacts with composite materials of varying layer thicknesses. Notably, it also reveals that thicker epoxy layers result in lower temperatures but higher displacement amplitudes—an ideal condition for testing purposes. ???Why does it matter? This work helps push forward high-fidelity modeling of composite materials, which is key to the AIM EFRC's mission. Understanding Material-Process-Microstructure-Performance (MP2) relationships is critical as we look to create more efficient, sustainable materials for the future. Relevance to AIM for Composites: This breakthrough directly supports AIM for Composites by providing enhanced predictive capabilities for composite behavior under laser testing. The new insights not only refine testing methodologies but also empower AIM’s strategic initiatives to innovate and optimize composite material design for a range of high-performance applications.
